Stories about people that were discovered

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't think of a better subject. Basically, whenever I read stories about specific people or events on places like reddit relationships or bad_service on LJ or whatever else, I always wonder what would happen if those people ever figured it out - since even with screennames and fake names, it can be pretty obvious.

(Example: Kevin posts about how his sister-in-law is a hoarder. His sister-in-law figures out it's about her because the details gave it away, even with fake names.)

Has anyone ever gotten caught, and/or heard of anyone else getting caught? Conversely, has anyone ever vented about you or someone you know?

Lol I once convinced myself that my colleague secretly also visits fandom!secrets. Years ago, I made a long rant about all the shit she does, and the next day, she acted really meek and pathetic. The thought that she might've seen what I wrote made me feel really terrible, so I ended up being super nice to her, despite aforementioned shit. But the chance of that actually being the case is totally minuscule, especially since she never once indicated being into anything geeky or fandom-related... of course, in public, neither do I... but that beside the point.

I actually suspect a friend of mine was a "known" anon, based on an offhand comment in one of her posts and the fact that she IS totally the type to come here. But we're more casual friends/close acquaintances, and the subject was very personal, so I never said anything.

I've wondered if my friend's sister comes here because of some very coincidental comments from anons that sounded like her.

Never happened to me, but I always worry it will, and I do wonder how other people can complain so specifically for that reason.

I don't know if this counts, but I remember it happening at the time and found it repelling and fascinating:

Someone remind me of that old LJ meme. "Hi ____, did you forget I had a livejournal?" I want to say the name was Rebecca but I'm not sure.

It was on bad_service or somewhere like that where this exact thing happened and the person who was talked about in the entry called them out.

Wasn't that ONTD with one troll posing as two terrible roommates who hated each other?

But yeah, I thought I also remembered it ending up being a troll.

I guess old LJ drama is all blurring together for me.

Had a high school friend with whom I was tumblr mutuals make a bitchy tumblr post about me once.

It was because in walking off stage for our senior production of Into the Woods, I backed into the wrong curtain and almost walked into her. I didn't see her because I was walking backwards and she was behind me, but I was also wearing a large hoop skirt. She was stage crew. She's also really tall & skinny as hell, so I'm kind of like ???

When I worked for Hollywood Video, they fired the people who'd set up a comm for people working there on LJ and got the comm taken down, claiming that just using the name of the company was a violation of policies, and talking about working for the company at all was a fireable offense.

I also had an acquaintance online once who got into massive trouble with his wife because she discovered an anon website where he was talking about their relationship, and his desire to cheat on her with much younger women.

I remembered another one! I knew a guy who faked his own death. To break up with someone. And he didn't just fake a sudden death. He faked having cancer for something like a year. Asshole.

I'm not 100% sure, but there was a rather... unique individual in my fandom who may have also been the subject of a roommate horror story. Apparently this person was a jerk roommate, had crazy sexytimes in the bathroom with their boyfriend, and slacked off at work while secretly doing fandom stuff on company time. It's said this was the same person who changed their name legally to a character they claimed to have "soulbonded" to. I remember them being pretty stuck up about people in fandom. I don't just mean the occasional "this fanfic is crap," I mean reading a fic about their soulbond and then RAGING or expressing extreme butthurt about the writer's interpretation of said character. In addition, they'd do things like shit-talk a person who accidentally stumbled into the middle of a closed RP thinking it was open. Shit-talking them despite the fact the RPer had been gracious enough to apologize and bow out. They would also write fanfiction and post it online for sale... but supposedly got around the legal issue by only charging enough to break even with the site's fees. Can't remember what happened to them though.
