Hmmm it's not his hair but his his hairline for me. A 27 year old with a hairline that far back looks like he's prematurely balding. He still looks well into his thirties in the blond version.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Canonically, he is baldy, or at least touchy about the concept

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I'm just saying that's what makes him look older to me, not the color of his hair.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think he's canonically baldy, just self-conscious about it happening. And being self-conscious about his age in general would make sense since in his world, he's practically ancient, despite being very young, but figure skating skews so young. It kind of makes sense that he might exaggerate his signs of aging.

My Dad had that hairline at 24...

I stared at the pic for awhile and honestly I can't see what you mean by hairline issues. He looks proportionally like the average anime character. I think compared to Yuri, he just has smaller eyes, and his hair is less voluminous and more fine, but he really doesn't strike me as having hairline or balding issues at all.

Seems to me like lots of anime Russians are some kind of platinum blond? To evoke that icy coldness I guess?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd also guess he was given silver hair to evoke the "ice" look. I wouldn't say he's platinum blond though, it's really just silver. Platinum blond would look whiter with blond undertones.

He looks exactly the same age to me (very young) in both pictures. The lighter/grey hair just makes him look slightly other-worldly.

I don't even know who this character is, but he looks like a fucking instagram teen with that hair color.

I can't see him as any older than 19 at the absolute oldest.

to be fair - anime style tends to make everyone look younger

I mean, each anime has their own style - there are definitely anime where it looks like fully grown men are actually supposed to only be 19. But in this show, compared with the other characters, Victor does look older. He's supposed to be older, of course, but he definitely doesn't look like a teenager to me.

How old is he supposed to be? I'd guess around 15 based on those pictures.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
27 looks about right to me either way.

Also, I don't watch YOI, but jesus christ that is one gorgeous anime dude. Unf.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well anime often makes 27 year olds old people especially when so many animes are about highschoolers and younger.

But I've known quite a few people who got gray hair very early. And that character design has him pretty smooth faced so I can easily see him as in his late 20s.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-01 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
In all fairness, Victor didn't "go gray", his hair is just silver - scenes from when he was in the juniors also show him with the same hair color. Unless he went gray at age 14 or something.

I have an uncle that was 100% white by 22. I started going grey in my early 20s as well. It happens.

It's anime though, even "realistic" ones tend to have hair colors and styles that don't exactly match anyone's natural hair irl. White hair on a young character doesn't necessarily spell "old" to me in anime, it just spells "the creators wanted this character to stand out visually."

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
he's just your typical white-haired bishounen. they're supposed to be "mysterious" according to the tropes. that or the hair is colored that way so the character stands out more.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
... that dude looks like he's 16 at best.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
damn sis you clearly didn't see him naked. He definitely doesn't look 16 lmao

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Something about those pictures looked really off and at first I thought it was just the blond edit (photoshop recolorings of characters always look weird to me) but I realized his bangs are also on the wrong side.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-02 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a cool style choice that, in some ways, intentionally evokes the appearance of an older person. As was remarked above, Viktor is ancient for a figure skater, near the end of his career, and getting ready to start coaching younger skaters who are just starting out. So even though the actual age-gap between him and Yuuri isn't that drastic, it's still meant to call up that sort of mentor/mentee relationship dynamic that happens between people who are in totally different life stages.
