Can you buy secondhand books from charity shops or library? That way you get to donate something, even if it's only a few cents.

The secret says op doesn't have access to a decent library. Buying second hand is always an option, but fyi authors don't see a penny from second hand book sales.

Yup. Or remaindered book sales. Great for readers, but if you're trying to support the author it's always better to buy an ebook than secondhand or remaindered.

Like you know how Barnes and Noble (and Borders before they went out of business) has all those clearance/sale racks near the front of the store? Those are remaindered books.

Do authors not make money off that? I thought when say, B&N buys 100 copies of something, they pay royalties on those bought copies? Or if they buy 100 and only sell 80, does the publisher only have to pay royalties on 80 copies?

That seems weird.

Different publishers have different agreements, but basically your second sentence is correct. They'll have a contract that after a certain time a certain percentage can be remaindered (or returned to the publisher, but they usually don't want them back).
