You can get free (legal) books from https://openlibrary.org/.

It may not have the latest bestsellers, but at least it's more than just public domain classics.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You can also sign up for something like BookBub, which has free genre books almost every day.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Though people should keep in mind that it's a library, so you only get to "borrow" five books at a time, you can only keep each book for two weeks, and that there's a chance the book you want will be unavailable because it's been "borrowed" by someone else.

I do that with DVDs. I even did it out of anger once. Bought X-Men First Class in a Blu-Ray/Digital combo. Find out the Digital can only be used with a certain player and the quality was shit. So I torrented it.

Care to explain what's so terrible about the Gutenberg Project?
Just curious.

I'd assume the lack of genre fiction. There is some, but not much, and none of it modern (for obvious reasons).
Project Gutenberg is amazing, but I can see sometimes wanting more variety or more modern stuff.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but the Gutenberg project only has books in the public domain, so while they can be a good place to get classic literature, they're not going to have anything recent. Maybe that's it?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Care to explain what's so great about it? It's true value lies in the role it plays in preserving classic literature, but it isn't much help for the average modern reader. And that's ok, it's just ridiculous for supporters to act like it's something it isn't.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a really weird overreaction in response to someone who only wanted to know why the Gutenberg Project didn't work for OP.

Have you tried Instafreebies.com or thought about becoming a book reviewer? (Like writing a book blog or doing amazon reviews.)

I know it's mostly indie authors and you're going to have to wade through a lot. But indie authors love reviews and will throw their books at you if you do review it and get the word out that it exists.

And you're more than allowed to set down what genres you like and don't and how much you're willing to do. Instafreebies just requires you have an account and no reviews of the book necessary.

Free books. Less guilt?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Can you buy secondhand books from charity shops or library? That way you get to donate something, even if it's only a few cents.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
The secret says op doesn't have access to a decent library. Buying second hand is always an option, but fyi authors don't see a penny from second hand book sales.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Or remaindered book sales. Great for readers, but if you're trying to support the author it's always better to buy an ebook than secondhand or remaindered.

Books are some of the hardest things to find to download, even the ones I want. I'm more admirable of you than anything.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I do this with movies. if I watch it online and like it enough, I make an effort to see it in the cinema when it comes out in my location (we tend to get late release dates for most things), and/or buy it on DVD/blu-ray.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think many libraries now set up "digital" book check-outs. My friend checks out books online for his Kindle, and they are a special file type that "expires" after a certain period of time, and the library can only "lend out" a certain number of copies at a time.

http://sweetfreebooks.com/

Put in your e-mail and genres and they will send you a daily e-mail list of all the daily free books on amazon.

Nothing wrong with that, OP - sometimes you simply can't buy a thing (or borrow), so you do what you need to.

When you do have money, give this bookseller a try: https://www.betterworldbooks.com/

Tons of inventory, and your money helps support a very good cause.

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
That is a rationalization and if you can live with it, then fine. But if you're really feeling guilty, which your secret points to, there are other options, as mentioned in this thread. Even a not great library can do an interlibrary loan. There's also this: http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeEBOOKS/

There's also this too, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a great resource if you're mainly interested in self-help books and the occasional freebie from a self published author. If you want anything else, the pickings are very slim.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd wager a fair number of pirates are like you, OP. I bought some much loved games ... and then used the torrented versions so I wouldn't have to save CDs and crap.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really lucky. I live in a city with amazing libraries & a lot of used book stores.

I second the person who rec'd betterworldbooks.com, but I also suggest hpb.com (Half Price Books) & thriftbooks.com for when you have money. Do you have any thrift stores in your area?

I know the author gets nothing if you buy used, but many people simply can't afford to buy first hand.

I'm not big on ebooks, sorry I can't help you with that, OP. I just know that Amazon runs a lot of Kindle book sales.

Good luck!! I hope your situation changes soon & you get better access &/or more money.

It's a rare public library that doesn't provide interlibrary loan services (aka ILL) and most public libraries (even in my dinky backwater town) have audio books and digital books--you still need a card and you still only get them for the loan period. Your own library/branch may not have digital media but they may belong to a consortium that does.
