Crafts?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I recently got into cross stitch! I picked up a kit on a whim and am now obsessed with it - it is actually super soothing to me and has been helping me feel less anxious (or at least focus on something that is not my anxiety and depression.) Since my brother's birthday is coming up, I am cross stitching him a couple Portal designs (which is one of his favorite games), and at the store today I found blue and orange oblong hoops to display them in!

Anyone else do any crafting? If so, what, and do you have any fun projects you're working on?

I've been wanting to get into cross stitch.

I should work on my spinning too (yarn), but it frustrates me because I'm still so unsure with it and after a few minutes I'm ready to go back to knitting and crocheting because I'm already good at those.

Right now I'm knitting a bag with one of the first yarns I spun myself. It's taken forever to figure out this project. The yarn looked so busy knit up, but I finally found a way to break it up by mixing it with a solid color yarn in a stitch pattern I like.

Sounds fun! I was never able to learn to knit, but my SO loves it. And spinning your own yarn sounds hard, but like you could make some cool stuff once you learn.

I have been seeing cross stitch stuff on tumblr lately and I love the look of it. I love the nerdy designs especially. Did you design your own or use a pattern?

I've been trying to needle felt tiny cacti. It's good for my anxiety, though I do stab myself pretty regularly.

That sounds really cute!

I'm using a pattern! Its the most popular Portal pattern online but I figure my brother will like it anyway. (found here: http://spritestitch.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4914&view=unread#unread) I want to try designing my own patterns though, I just need to think of something.

Also that sounds cute! I have the same thing with the accidental stabbing though :p

I like to make simple macrame necklaces with hemp and shells/pebbles I find on the beach (after big winter storms is a good time to look, there's usually lots of shells and little stones with holes for stringing, and the occasional piece of sea glass). When I have enough I take them to the beach on busy weekends and sell them to tourists.

I can knit a little bit, and right now just have to stitch a blanket together because it's made of smaller squares.

I also bake a lot and experiment with new recipes.

Oooh, fun! What kind of experiments do you do with the baking?

I liked to create my own recipes. I'll take a basic recipe and modify some ingredients.

I have a sugar cookie dough recipe that is great for making cutouts, but it's pretty bland (it's meant to go with icing). I've done it with orange extract, lemon extract, mint extract and for added flair, made chocolate chip mint cookies (and I dye them green).

I'll tweak different recipes with alcohol too, I have a recipe for rum and coke brownies but I've done it with jack and coke and also have adjusted the quantities to get a better flavor.

I started experimenting with paper mache clay for cosplay, but I'm making a few other things out of it in the meantime. It's really great stuff! It's pretty easy to work with, solidifies pretty strong, seems fairly sandable and can be coaxed into a smooth finish.
I'm thinking of trying and selling a few small things, for a bit of extra income (or just to cover costs!)

I've never heard of paper mache clay! Googling it, it looks interesting though. I've made a few cosplay props in the past, but mostly just out of cardboard.

I bet selling them on etsy would be fun. Especially if they're cosplay props.

This is the stuff I tried.
I'll be seeing how it works in large quantities - my idea is to make Cloud's sword out of it. But so far it adheres to itself like nobody's business, and you can also use it in small molds.

The truth is I haven't considered selling cosplay props, because they generally seem like too much work to make cost-effective, you know? Like I'm building Cloud's sword, and I wouldn't sell it for less than idk, 300$? I have no idea if people would be willing to pay that kind of money...
And I'm not quite "in" anime fandom enough to know what's going right now, that I could just make it and have a decent chance of being able to sell.

At the moment I made a few small Jewish household items. I'm actually kind of terrible with coming up with things I can sell :X I'm so bad at making money.

I'm currently researching how to create plush dolls! A professor suggested I expand my project (post-apocalyptic zodiac characters) to include figurines. Figurines are expensive! So plush dolls it is. I know how to sew and I've found a reasonably simple (but still very cute) tutorial/pattern.

Woah that sounds fun! I've alway wanted to learn now to make plushes, and that character concept sounds really cool.

I crochet every once in a blue moon, so I have a reasonable supply of scarves, blankets, and fingerless gloves.

Nice! I tried crocheting once and I was never able to get the hang of it for some reason. I know what you mean about the scarves though - my SO knits and she's made like, everyone she knows a scarf :p

I like the idea of stuff like knitting and embroidery, but I always get really bored after half an hour. I have a beautiful embroidery kit and every now and then, I'll drag it out and stitch a flower or vine, and then put it away for three months. I'm halfway done with a small sampler I bought seven years ago.

I knit, crochet, sew, and do the occasional bit of embroidery (decorative stitches on garb, not standalone pictures to hang on a wall. Also I am trying to learn how to bake sourdough bread.

I'm sewing cut scraps of fabric and ribbon and making them into flowers. I used the flowers to make Lapel pins, headbands, hair pins, and more. It is called kanzashi.
