Bill's actress confirmed that her character is gay.

Why on earth would anyone conclude that that is why capaldi is leaving? Has he made some anti-gay statements I've missed? Or is it the whole "straight white men are all hateful" naritive? Legit question.

Even OP didn't actually conclude that, they wondered (for reasons that I cannot surmise). And no one else has really given it the time of day. So I wouldn't ascribe any more significance to it than random firings of neurons in OP's head.

I mean, he's shit at writing hetero romances, there's no reason to believe he'll be better at gay ones.

Not just the romance, but also, it's hard to imagine him making Billy anything other than another object about which the Doctor can have a moral dilemma about the particular agonizingly self-critical but in a way that never escapes being self-centered masculinity with which he (Moffat) is obsessed

I have to agree, and I love Moffat's storytelling. But I'm uncomfortable with Moffat writing a lesbian. So I have really mixed feelings about the whole thing. I'm going to take a wait and see approach.

Because he's never done it before, right? Madame Vastra and Jenny totally don't count.

The man cannot win.

I can't help but think he's doing this because he's uncomfortable with the idea of any sort of romantic tension between a black woman and a white Doctor.

Pretty sure Capaldi announced he was leaving months before the new companion was cast. Not sure why you would think his leaving would be related to this.

He has also played gay characters before.

He said in a recent interview he never wanted to reach the point where he was phoning it in. It's a demanding role so props to him.

When he took the role he said he would only do it for a few years because the show's success depends on it being Doctor Who, not The [Insert Star's Name Here] Show.

I'm thinking the OP is not British - it's pretty hard to be so homophobic you would leave a job in the British acting scene I would have thought.

It's probably Chibnall wanting a clean break, much like Moffat wanted a clean break from the RTD era.

Er, no he's leaving because a) he wants to and b) there's a new showrunner taking over. And he announced that before the companion was cast.

And lol of course fandom will put a bad spin on specifically auditioning only POC actors for the role and writing a lesbian character because there's a collective delusion that everything Moffat does is evil, but the thing I'm disappointed in is that it looks like Chibnall is firing her after one season anyway. So Martha and Bill will both be dumped asap. Not the best look.

Capaldi's probably leaving because of his health. It was known he'd leave before Bill was even written. The role of the Doctor takes a toll on all the actors, and Peter's old AND does his own stunts, to the crew's terror. That's why they had to have a year-long hiatus.
