Dan Brown is a notoriously terrible writer who somehow keeps getting published. Who else is in that category? Ludlum?

Never have I so strongly wanted to red pencil a professional novel. His writing style was that painful.

VINDICATION!

(Seriously, one of my friends called me a snob because I said the exact same thing. I tried to explain to her that editing my own work had trained me to see the flaws everywhere, but I don't think she really believed me.)

People like that annoy me a little. I think it's because they're unable to detect any flaws, so that means there aren't any - or at least, no appreciable amount. Anyone who claims to see flaws has to be wrong or snobby, because they can't admit that such people are catching more mistakes than they are.

I read Digital Fortress once. I'd say the author it reminds me of most is Eric Van Lustbader, although Lustbader has a lot more sex. You could also compare Richard K. Morgan, but he at least has some idea of how to structure a paragraph.

There's a buttload of authors like that, and they're quite easy to find if you look around for instance an airplane bookstore; Brown is notable mostly for the fact that, for some reason, the world decided to take him really seriously for a year or two.
