Yeah I like when directors/creatives admit they are fans, being a fan can be a big motivation to get into the film industry and there's nothing wrong with admitting to what inspires you.

Yep. I remember watching an hourlong thing on the CW where he talked about the DCEU last year and it was cool to see such enthusiasm.

counterpoint - the existence of this tweet:

https://twitter.com/thatkevinsmith/status/2554608773?lang=en

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The phrasing is a little crude, but I don't see anything wrong with a guy saying how much his wife still turns him on after ten years of being together. Many people would envy that, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I respect his relationship but it's a fucking terrible tweet

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
He didn't even write it though. Did you not read the thread? "Lost a bet to JenSchwalbach. Prize was to post the worst tweet she could muster on my twitter."

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, it was a bet he lost and posting that was paying his dues.

I mean he's said and done plenty of offensive stuff, but this is just kind of *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't find it offensive, it's just a bad tweet and it makes me laugh

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
SA as above. I just read the follow up on that tweet where he says it was the result of him losing a bet with his wife to post the worst tweet she could muster. That's pretty funny, actually.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, despite the kind of crude phrasing that makes me cringe (because it's just not my scene), there's nothing actually shitty about this. I mean, it seems pretty clear his wife was fine with him posting it. And there wasn't really anything derogatory about it. Despite being crude, he was actually doing a pretty good job of talking about her as an equal and active person in their sex life.

That said, it sounds like the whole thing was actually a joke/bet he had going with his wife. Either way, this changes my generally favorable impression of the guy exactly zero.

He loves some stuff that I don't love, but it's always great to listen to his podcast when I'm in the mood for fannish enthusiasm completely unfettered by critical snobbery.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really a fan of his stuff (not in a "I dislike them" way, more in a "I'm just not particularly interested in them" way), but his enthusiasm is charming. A lot of people seem to be into dismissing excitement over stuff as "cringey"or w/e, but I think its nice

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I like listening to him talk in general, he's a good (verbal) storyteller. He's always very frank about his writer/director experiences, too, which is interesting... Like Tusk was a horrific shit pile, but the maniacal glee he expressed when talking about the urban legend and how the hell you'd turn THAT into a movie pitch was so fun to listen to.

Is there some reason it's not cool to like Kevin Smith now?

You should find something with him talking about writing a Superman script.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
You start to understand how movies can go really wrong. He was really enthusiastic to start with. I think it was in An Evening with Kevin Smith or 2: Evening Harder.

Giant spider!

ayrt

You know, I was so genuinely baffled by anyone thinking that could be a good idea, that I thought it had to be a joke, but then I remembered somebody thought Superman IV was a good idea. And Peters did eventually get his giant spider in Wild Wild West. And we all know how well that turned out.
