That is a painful font.

Name names, OP. Or at least give examples.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
The image OP used is probably a big hint.

Feel like I can't react to this properly until I know if you're mad that people say there should be POC characters in medieval Europe, or if you're mad that people say there shouldn't be POC characters in medieval Europe

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, why does it have to be about poc characters at all? Historical dramas are frequently full of inaccuracies besides anything to do with race.

Bit of a joke, anon

As someone who recently tried reading the book "Hanta Yo", I feel you, anon.

As a history MA, I can assure you that most "historical fiction" is not actually very historical either, lol. I've really stopped drawing the line. Either you're writing a historical paper with a wide range of sources including primary sources, or you're writing a fictional story inspired by history (with varying degrees of how loosely inspired we're talking).

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most historical fiction authors should just drop the "historical" aspect and admit they are writing pure fantasy. Take away the names but do the same basic story.

Historical fiction doesn't even bother me that much but I feel for anyone it does bother they could just pretend they are writing an original story instead.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't agree, because it doesn't seem to me that ahistoricism is actually a flaw in a fictional story, and on the other hand setting things in specific historical locales does change the way that the story works

Also, you will pry my sf/fantasy historical fiction from my cold dead hands.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
they could just pretend they are writing an original story instead.

Yeah, that's not really going to work, sorry. It's like telling people that instead of being bothered by a fic full of typos and grammatical errors, maybe they should just pretend it's written in an alternate language that's correct. 9

Yeeeeessssss. I could've written this secret in my sleep, OP!

Game of Thrones or some other War of the Roses media?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's a Tudor rose.

*tries to think what has recently been addressing the War of the Roses*

My favorite though was when there was suddenly a slew of Italian Renaissance set shows and everyone brought up the King of Naples and his stuffed dead people feast. (The stuffed dead people were arranged as though feasting, not people feasting on dead people stuffed with whatever.)

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Words cannot express how glad I am you clarified the "stuffed dead people feast" thing.

op

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
to clarify: that is the Tudor rose, my primary complaints on this front atm are the show The Tudors and anything involving Philippa Gregory

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ah ha ha the Tudors. I always thought that show must have two main camps of writers, the ones who were super into getting minor historical details 100% correct even when pointless, and the ones who were super into throwing away major historical details for more dramaz when the actual history is more dramaz that anything they could cook up.

Highly inaccurate historical fiction seriously skewed understanding of Chinese history since people took Romance of the Three Kingdoms as history texts. At least when people nowadays write stuff based off the books it's generally played with to the point where nobody could really confuse it for fact (Cao Cao teaming up with Oda Nobunaga and Achilles? Yeah not really in danger of screwing up anyone's history lessons).

A+ Warriors Orochi reference, anon. I like you.

You should check out Korean historical dramas from the 80s and 90s. The public was insane about accuracy and production teams would even get hatemail for using a style of hair pin from the wrong period.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I'm glad they moved away from that and into the campy style of today.
