Favorite Historical Periods

Inspired by #2 - are there any historical periods you find particular interesting to read about, either in non-fiction or in historical fiction? What makes them so interesting to you?

1920s to 1960s. You get the great depression, WWII, civil rights movement and space. So much great stuff.

I like ancient Egypt and China, pre-Colombian Americas, the 20s-30s Europe (hello Agatha Christie's Poirot), 1970s USA, and anything prehistoric/Stone Age. I just find those periods in time interesting.

It feels a bit odd to think of the 1970s as "history" - not wrong, but odd. But I do like the movies and culture of the 70s a lot so.

Ayart

I know, especially since I was around in the 70s! Then I remember that 1970 was nearly half a century ago, and that's a pretty long time. Then I feel old, haha.

For some reason, ever since I was a kid, I've been fascinated by Tzarist Russia. Not sure why. But I love reading about anything from early Kiev and Muscovy all the way to Nicholas II.

Ancient Rome. The Celts also interest me.

And the development of military history. Not modern stuff, but ancient warfare through middle ages and maybe up to the 17th or 18th centuries.

Also the ancient Aztecs and Mayans. Actually, the Mayan people in general.

Military history through the 18th century is so fascinating. Gets a lot less interesting after that though.

Also I should definitely read more about Mesoamerican history, it definitely seems fascinating, there's just so much stuff out there.

The Tudors: drama, deaths, intrigue, jewels, royalty, deception
The American frontier: people overcoming the perils of nature, fighting/overcoming odds
The 1920s: elegance & decadence
WWII: kicking ass and killing Nazis

I like a pretty wide range of Classical, from Ancient Greek up through the Roman Empire. Less interested in Christian Rome, though, so about 350s my interest wanes. Also love ancient Persia.

I like early medieval British isles (500-700ish). I like Viking Age Scandinavia (~750 to ~1050).

I also like medieval China and Japan.

Basically anything post-medieval is way less interesting to me.

Boudicca's PMS has to be one of the most interesting historical periods, nobody elses saw London burned to the ground.

The two main ones would be the European 17th century as a whole, and then the late 19th century - probably from about 1870 through the beginning of the war in 1914.

The 17th century is really interesting to me because it's completely fucking wild - there's an insane richness to the period, because you have this profound ferment across European society, and you also have sufficient recording that we have a pretty substantial wealth of detail of what people were doing. It's also interesting because it's a period of transition when a ton of institutions were in flux and where you start to see the development of a lot of modern ways of thinking, and you have these huge massive consequential things like the 30 Years War going on. Just really fascinating. And they also had good clothes and style.

The late 19th century is interesting because it's a distinctively modern period, but immediately before the enormous changes wrought by the war, and there's a ton of really interesting cultural and intellectual things going on in the period. So mostly from that point of view.

1914-1939. I am fascinated by WWI and all it entailed and influenced. Then you have the 1920s and the rise of motion pictures, the radio and popular music, Art Deco design, and great fashion. Then the 1930s are just super interesting with the Great Depression, excellent literature/film/music/fashion of the era...everything.

The Great War was such a mess. I'm spending the four centenary years trying to figure out what happened. And the more I find out, the more annoyed I am that the whole shebang was hijacked by the literary war - and that I bought into that for so long. There was more to that war than poets.

I like 1400s to 1900s Europe and America the best.

I also have a fondness for Ancient civilizations, especially Mesopotamia.

I wouldn't say no to either World War or the Crusades either.
