US income tax question

(Anonymous) 2017-04-19 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone ever had to deal with tax fraud? I filed an extension yesterday for myself and (I had her permission) for my mom, only to find out both were rejected because someone had filed returns using our social security numbers. So now I'm freaking out. Apparently I have until 4/23 to file a paper extension without penalty, and I have to fill out IRS identity theft paperwork. I'd like to call the IRS, but I imagine I'd be on hold for hours. Any advice?

Really, all you can do is call the IRS and be on hold. We can't help you.

CALL THEM! Better to be on hold for hours than get royally fucked over.

Oh yeah, I will, but apparently it's such a common problem that they have tons of paperwork to fill out before identity theft victims talk to them.

Have your attorney call them. Then they can be on hold for hours and then you can pay even more cash. Or just phone. And next time an election rolls around, remember to vote in favor of more cash for public services like higher staffing on tax advice lines.

Dude I don't hate the IRS and I would totally rather my tax money went to them and not, say, a useless border wall.

What you talking about, Willis? Mexico is paying for the border wall. Or is it Canada? Which is the one with people who have funny accents and speak that weird other European language, lots of drugs all over the place?

I'm waiting to find out how Japan is going to pay for the wall around Hawaii though.

I talked to my mom, who's a tax preparer, and she said there's a place on the IRS website that's dedicated to identity fraud and lets you bypass being on the phone. She also said if you were just waiting for a refund, then you don't have to file an extension.

I usually owe state taxes but not federal, so I probably do owe some money, but last year it was around $120 even with late payment interest. I started filling out the ID theft forms on the IRS website, but I'm gonna have to get a copy of my last year's return from the tax prep guy-last year was the first time I paid a professional and I lost the electronic copy of my return they sent. Argh.

I have, and when I called them to find out what I should do, I was on hold for less than five minutes. The woman I spoke to was very helpful and walked me through exactly what forms I needed to fill out and what I needed to do... the entire thing took me under 15 minutes.
