5 is regarding the Sylar/Mohinder ship from Heroes. One's a sexy serial killer, the other's a sexy geneticist. Most of the fic I've seen is actually consensual, oddly enough. :P

Yeah, I actually kinda sorta wrote a rant about that a while back (http://velvet-mace.livejournal.com/238193.html). But again, I agree with the op -- except for in those cases where for some reason it really makes a difference at that moment that one is a geneticist. After all, he's not just some random geneticist pulled out of a lab, he's got a name and Sylar knows it.

I read your rant and agree with you. I'm a huge Sylar/Mohinder shipper but it really annoys me when people turn their relationship into fluff with absolutely no explanation. I mean, I've seen fics where Sylar, Mo, and Molly are the happiest family ever and bake cookies together all the time. All I can think is "Umm, no. That's not my ship." I know it's a dark ship, and that's how I like it. But I also believe that consensual Sylar/Mohinder is completely possible (and, to me, preferable).

Yeah, I agree with the OP as well. Besides, a great writer can usually convey to us which character is which in a fic without saying things like "the geneticist" every other line.

I've seen fics where Sylar, Mo, and Molly are the happiest family ever and bake cookies together all the time.

I'd accept that if it came with a neato backstory of how Sylar was brainwashed or was being manipulated like a meat puppet. But then I'd rather read the story of how they brainwashed him than read about him baking cookies. Unless the cookies were full of horror and irony.

Besides, a great writer can usually convey to us which character is which in a fic without saying things like "the geneticist" every other line.

Yeah, when you start having to label his profession, then maybe you just aren't paragraphing very well. Or possibly you are bouncing your POV around too fast. If it's two people in the room, a reader can usually keep them sorted pretty easily by the action and the dialogue, with minimal reminders.

I'm a Sy/Mo writer (praying this secret does not refer to me, but I'm pretty sure... ^_~), definitely not a fluff and cookies writer, but anyway...
