Re: Pet Peeves!

People who go apeshit about people being on their phones "all the time." I'm hardly ever on my phone. My personal phone is just a flip phone and the smart phone I have is from work, so I can't put whatever I want on it and I avoid using it for personal business. As a result, 95% of the time I'm checking my phone, I'm just checking the time.

Still, it's like some people have a spidey-sense where if I so much as glace at my phone they will perk up and notice because SOMEONE IS ON THEIR PHONE OMG! and then give me a hard time about it so they can feel validation.

There was that older guy at the library a few weeks ago. I was walking up the steps and had pulled my phone out to TURN OFF THE SOUND and he was coming down the steps past me and he looks at me, laughs, smirks, and shakes his head.

Then this weekend, I was at a museum, sitting on a bench in a theater area by myself, waiting for a short film to start. I pulled out my phone to glance at my work email when this guy (maybe 5-10 years older than me) comes in with two older men and sit down. He leans towards me to ask some question about the museum hours without saying "excuse me" or anything and when I look up at him politely, he says "Whoa, I didn't mean to interrupt what you were doing there!" (Except clearly he did, because he went ahead and did it? Also, I don't know if this was a "Whatever you're doing on your phone must be stupid and frivolous so I have the right to interrupt" thing or a "You're an attractive woman and I'm entitled to your attention thing" or an "I'm an idiot" thing, but none of those options are exactly good.) I had only been killing time while sitting there alone, so I didn't really mind that I was being asked a question, but it was really rude of him to act like I had been doing something rude by having dared to have been looking at my phone when he walked into the room. I answered his questions and then the two older guys started joking about how "I guess she would have all the answers, she has her phone!" "I don't even know where my phone is!" "People these days on their phones all the time!" blah blah blah...

Also, I'm nearly 40, and my mother, who is nearly 70, is on her phone far more than I am, so phone use really doesn't count as a "LOL you kids" situation anymore. Cell phones have been around longer than teenagers of today have been alive, and they wouldn't still be around if today's adults hadn't bought and used them.

After the museum, I walked through a plaza nearby where lots of people were enjoying the nice day and yeah, at least half of the adults there were staring and their phones. It's not that I don't understand lamenting people being on their phones all the time, but I wish A) they didn't pick me to complain to, and B) didn't act like their disdain gives them the right to be rude and condescending, when they have no idea what I'm actually doing when I look at my phone.

Lucky. I'm the person that randos pick out of a crowd to share all their theories about how their fillings are broadcasting their thoughts to the Illuminati.

I used to work at a single lonely register at a grocery store express checkout near the far exit by the pharmacy. I could go 30-40 minutes at a stretch without another customer to interrupt my previous one... lemme tell you, it never seems like the ones who need it are the ones picking up the psych meds.

Someone sat down next to me on the train yesterday and asked me if I believed in cell phones, which led into a 15 minute rant about the evils of social media and then she asked me if I was a lawyer and if I'd seen her daughter. On the plus side, I could ignore her without anyone complaining to my manager.

The normal conspiracy crazies were so boring, the ones that stick with me, that I wake up in the middle of the night and wonder about were the mundanely nutty ones. They would sneak up on you, looking like another customer who would have the decency to be in a hurry home, there are many of them like the woman who spent at least fifteen minutes after her bags were in her cart telling me she couldn't believe her daughter could learn Spanish. She has red hair and freckles, no one who ever looked at her would guess she was learning Spanish! She's fair! Just a tiny little Irish princess who can speak Spanish now! It's amazing! Foreigners give her daughter flowers for it, even the ones who don't speak Spanish!

Wow. That's pretty good. I mean, I had someone ask me if I would marry a foreigner, but I'm about 60% sure he might have been fishing for a green card.

What did you say?

The only marriage proposal I got was from a drunk guy trying to buy condoms and it was immediately followed by him running out and vomiting everything he'd drank that night in the parking lot.

Also I'm only slightly sure that's what he slurred at me.

Spouse and I were out walking and playing Pokemon Go together and having fun and had an older lady come up to us "I hope you're talking to each other!"

We just kind of baffled answered "We... are?"
