It's been bugging me more and more when I read things where people don't know the difference between things like "anymore" and "any more" or "maybe" and "may be".

People who check their facebook/take selfies/etc. while driving. Assholes.

I often wonder what they're thinking. Then I realize the whole point is that they aren't thinking, which in a way is even scarier.

I once thought a woman driving behind me was trying to take a photo of my license plate. I wasn't doing anything wrong, so I didn't know what was up. She kept bring her phone up to the top of her steering wheel and I thought "How hard is it to just take a picture?" Then I realized she must have been texting. Fortunately, we were on an otherwise empty side street, although it was a residential area and there could have been kids around.

People who inject themselves into every conversation. Some things aren't about you! We don't need your half-ass attempt to make it so!

People who pass right in front of you when there is nowhere near enough room for that and you have to slam on your brakes. It happens all the time here in Texas, and it pisses me off so much every time.

along similar lines, people with babies and real little kids who walk in front of moving cars. You'd think the kid would make them MORE careful....

Some people seem to merge back into my lane really close on purpose - even when traffic is light enough that they could easily get further ahead before merging - because they want to show me how annoyed they are that I didn't magically realize I was in their way and move so they didn't have to pass me.

People who don't know how to write a review for a product. "I liked it" is not a review. "I didn't like it" is not a review. Complaining about slow delivery service for said product is not a review, neither is complaining that you didn't get the product at all or it arrived damaged. Complaining about buying a product in one place only to find it cheaper/on sale elsewhere is also not a review.

Details make a review! You didn't like the thing? Okay, why? Was it too big, too small, not as it was depicted on the site, didn't work like it was supposed to? It wasn't what you were expecting? Okay, why? Was it too expensive for what it was? Again, why, what were you expecting? Tell us! Oh, you liked the thing? That's great, now tell us what about it made you like it so much! You love the color, you love the fit, you love using it, those are good details for a review, include them! You can do it!

I don't mind so much mentioning that it arrived damaged, just....it's not a review, like you said. Have a note but it shouldn't be the bulk of your write up.

To add onto this, reviews for books or movies that aren't actually reviews, just extended summaries.

"In this movie, Sandra Bullock and Johnny Depp do a thing." WOW REALLY I DIDN'T KNOW THAT FROM THE TRAILER.

How Instagram is hellbent on not showing things in order. Sure, I don't check it every day, but you don't have to cycle through the same three people who posted twelve hours ago. Give me things in chronological order and we can fucking continue.

People who talk on their phone in front of you, and keep mouthing apologies even though you can obviously hear them continuing the conversation. I'm forgiving of people who keep going "okay, great, I have to go-" and the other person just won't take the hint, it's people who are 1/2 of the problem.

The RL equivalent of this is even worse.

Thought of an old one - people who used to make fun of Mary Sues, leave nasty reviews and everything else, but it was obvious they just didn't like OCs. I mean, fine, you don't like OCs, but then... maybe don't read them?

I mean, I hated a lot of ships in my fandom. I sometimes left constructive criticism on pieces that just happened to have those ships, but mostly I knew to avoid fics I wouldn't like in the first place.

Re: Pet Peeves!

(Anonymous) 2017-04-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The floor's bathroom in my office building is shared between several tiny offices. There are three stalls, and the bathroom has no music or anything, so it's completely quiet and everyone hears every fart and poop you make. Since it's just a few small offices, you pretty much make eye contact with everyone on your floor daily.

So it's my pet peeve when people deliberately go to the middle stall instead of prioritizing the side stalls. Because the closer you to me when I'm pooping in a deathly quiet room, the more awkward it is. If it were just in a public bathroom, who cares, but when it's people who you have to make eye contact with and smile at it's awkward.

I also hate when women just silently stay in the stall for ten minutes, not pooping, not peeing, not even audibly checking their phone or something. it's creepy, and I'm trying to poop. I realize you're probably trying to poop too and waiting for me to leave (probably?) to avoid poop noise anxiety but I feel like you're silently judging me and I know you're there why are you sitting in the stall silently for so damn long

yes I know these pooping pet peeves are my own personal issues lol

Mob mentality on Tumblr and seeing a huge SJW mob almost destroy a blogger I really like over a mistake that had zero ill intent.

People who drag up a person's shady past as way of saying "don't follow / reblog from them" when the person has learned from it, changed for the better and moved on. Doubly so if people believe the asshole's judgment and don't go check the person out for themselves.

SJW's who focus on "problematic" words used in a post instead of the actual message of a post, which leads to complete topic derailment and hate mobs.

People who see you need to get by or use some communal item they're using and they make no effort to hurry up or get out of your way.

Re: Pet Peeves!

People who go apeshit about people being on their phones "all the time." I'm hardly ever on my phone. My personal phone is just a flip phone and the smart phone I have is from work, so I can't put whatever I want on it and I avoid using it for personal business. As a result, 95% of the time I'm checking my phone, I'm just checking the time.

Still, it's like some people have a spidey-sense where if I so much as glace at my phone they will perk up and notice because SOMEONE IS ON THEIR PHONE OMG! and then give me a hard time about it so they can feel validation.

There was that older guy at the library a few weeks ago. I was walking up the steps and had pulled my phone out to TURN OFF THE SOUND and he was coming down the steps past me and he looks at me, laughs, smirks, and shakes his head.

Then this weekend, I was at a museum, sitting on a bench in a theater area by myself, waiting for a short film to start. I pulled out my phone to glance at my work email when this guy (maybe 5-10 years older than me) comes in with two older men and sit down. He leans towards me to ask some question about the museum hours without saying "excuse me" or anything and when I look up at him politely, he says "Whoa, I didn't mean to interrupt what you were doing there!" (Except clearly he did, because he went ahead and did it? Also, I don't know if this was a "Whatever you're doing on your phone must be stupid and frivolous so I have the right to interrupt" thing or a "You're an attractive woman and I'm entitled to your attention thing" or an "I'm an idiot" thing, but none of those options are exactly good.) I had only been killing time while sitting there alone, so I didn't really mind that I was being asked a question, but it was really rude of him to act like I had been doing something rude by having dared to have been looking at my phone when he walked into the room. I answered his questions and then the two older guys started joking about how "I guess she would have all the answers, she has her phone!" "I don't even know where my phone is!" "People these days on their phones all the time!" blah blah blah...

Also, I'm nearly 40, and my mother, who is nearly 70, is on her phone far more than I am, so phone use really doesn't count as a "LOL you kids" situation anymore. Cell phones have been around longer than teenagers of today have been alive, and they wouldn't still be around if today's adults hadn't bought and used them.

After the museum, I walked through a plaza nearby where lots of people were enjoying the nice day and yeah, at least half of the adults there were staring and their phones. It's not that I don't understand lamenting people being on their phones all the time, but I wish A) they didn't pick me to complain to, and B) didn't act like their disdain gives them the right to be rude and condescending, when they have no idea what I'm actually doing when I look at my phone.

Drivers who swing out to the left to turn right. The only time that's necessary is if you're in a fricking semi or turning down one of those weird backwards-angled New England roads.
