I think it was less that he was side-splittingly hilarious on his own, and more that he's being contrasted to the rest of the movie.

I loved him. I did think he was funny. Not side-splittingly so, but this movie did not need that. He was a refreshing bit of humor and a bit of lightness in a very dark movie. I don't know. It is personal taste I guess because I really, really loved him. First Star Wars droid I've cared a lot about.

Me too, he was actually funny and his relationship with Cassian was interesting. I wonder if OP liked the other SW droids. I never have.

^when people aren't polite enough to tag for spoilers

(Anonymous) 2017-04-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume anyone who doesn't tag their spoilers on F!S is doing it on purpose because they think it's funny to spoil people. So, you know, yeah, OP's a dick, but not much you can do to stop em.

It is a prequel to the original trilogy. Those characters were not in the original trilogy.

It came out in December. It's almost May. Anyone who cares about being spoiled for it saw it already.

"Warning: Some secrets are NOT worksafe and may contain SPOILERS. "

People who can't be arsed to read that warning aren't going to read post-specific warnings either.

I am all for warning about spoilers. I am very spoiler-phobic. And, yes, it would be nice to warn for spoilers. But the spoilery part was at the end of the secret. If you care about spoilers, why are you reading a secret about a movie you haven't seen? I avoid all Mass Effect and Dragon Age secrets (among others) because even though they are old games, I'm only just now starting to play them and things which wouldn't be a spoiler for most people who have played years ago would be a spoiler for me. Yes, people warning is a good thing, but you have to take some responsibility for yourself too.

He's voiced by a Firefly actor so must be uncritically lauded regardless of how well executed the character actually is. Fuckin' Browncoats.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Boy, it's funny, Firefly hater anon. this war is long in the past for everyone else but you really just keep on fighting it. kind of like another person who stayed committed to a lost cause long after the end of the war. maybe you've heard of him. his name was Malcolm Reynolds.

I don't know what the fandom consensus says, but he was probably the team member that stood out the least in my mind. I liked him, but I liked the humans more.

He's more Siri than Slapstick. If you go in expecting the latter, you'll be disappointed. I personally went in expecting HK-47, except less homicidal.

Other than that, I actually liked him better than the humans. I can't really remember any of the Humans, aside from Jyn.

He was my favorite. Mostly by virtue of being Alan Tudyk.

And then it was Chirrut.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I forgot to add the spoiler tag when I submitted the secret. It wasn't deliberate, I just don't usually make secrets about recent media so it's not an issue most of the time. I'm sorry.

Thanks (not being sarcastic! I honestly appreciate it, since I haven't gotten to see the film and I was a little disappointed).
fwiw the real dicks are the anons who seem to think spoiling is some sort of great joyful privilege.

This was one movie where hype really hurt it. I'm not sure how I would've felt about K2 or the Vader hallway scene if I'd watched the movie before hearing how AMAZING they were. They were fine but neither stood out to me in any way. I might like them better if I wasn't expecting amazing.

To be quite honest, I couldn't bring myself to care about a single character's death in this movie at all. I didn't even think it was a bad movie, I just found it and the characters in it bland and forgettable.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Whereas I welled up for three of the major deaths in this movie, and I very rarely cry during death scenes. In fact I usually find them OTT and cliche. But in Rogue One I found each one moving and sorrowful in its own way. Not trying to invalidate your own experience of the movie - just putting out a contrasting experience.

It was less that he was amazing and more that most the other characters were less than stellar. Especially the main male and female.
