Why is A/B/O still a thing?

[personal profile] illiadandoddity 2017-04-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And moreover, why is it still such a popular thing, and not limited to a few fandoms like Teen Wolf? I swear to god, if I go into any fandom on AO3, it feels like a good 20% of the smut fics will be some variation on A/B/O and I'm sick to fucking death of it.

As a fan of A/B/O, I agree. Thank you kinky porn gods!

Yes! I love a/b/o.

I'm loving that this was the first reply.

And I couldn't agree more. :D

People think it's hot and emotionally satisfying

As to why people think it's hot and emotionally satisfying, I couldn't say. It does include some kinks that work for me but on the whole, it just seems like too much getting worked up over stuff.

Because the kinks work for some people. I personally wish we could see some parts without other parts. I like the heat part and the d/s aspects, but I could do without the self lubrication and knotting. But clearly it works for a lot of people.

Same-ism, though I like knotting - but the self lubrication makes me actively dislike the sex, and I sort of hate the whole predetermination of it, so I can only just barely stomach it if people try to subvert the tropes.

I just don't like the lack of choices and the "biological imperative" thing. I am all for heats and lubrication nonsense and even knotting, but the whole assigned at birth and can never change and the entire not very subtle gender stuff, that's what annoys me about it.

Why is any kink a thing?

Re: Why is A/B/O still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people like it. The same reason ANY trend is a thing.

And give me some fandoms you are into. I bet there are maybe 5% of fics that are ABO.

Re: Why is A/B/O still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Even Teen Wolf, something that has Alpha/Beta/Omega stuff built into the show, only has less than 2% of rated explicit fics having A/B/O dynamics.

Re: Why is A/B/O still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
The Alpha/Beta/Omega stuff built into the show is not the A/B/O kinky stuff that is being discussed. Verrrry different.

Yeah, Sherlock is one of the fandoms with the most A/B/O fics, and only 2.4 percent of Johnlock fics on AO3 are A/B/O.

Maybe smaller fandoms have more A/B/O fics proportionally? Either that or OP's dislike of A/B/O is causing her to have an inflated sense of its prevalence. My money's on that it's a bit of both.

I don't know :(

You know what pisses me off even more, though? When I click on an ABO fic out of desperation for something to read because it looks like a subversion and might possibly be interesting... and then 1.5 chapters in they throw all subversion out the window and it's all moaning Omegas and knotting all the time :||||||

I haven't seen much lately so I looked at the numbers on AO3 and I can confirm it's very rare in star wars, even in Kylux.
I hate it too...

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know but I hate it and want it to go awaaaaay. Or at least not be so prevalent. And it extra annoys me in Teen Wolf since there are canon definitions for those terms, but nobody actually uses them. Looking for Omega Derek does not give me the results I want. :(

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
read more Warcraft fic, then. Despite worgen, I don't think there's much A/B/O.

Re: Why is A/B/O still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder the same thing. :/ Like the only thing hot in it for me is probably the going into heat and just the need to mate/be fucked. But other than that, no thanks. I don't want to read about self-lubricating assholes or mpreg.

I actually like the whole being in heat super-horny aspect of it(and even the knotting, I'll be honest) but only when it involves actual werewolves or wolf-people, have it turn up in a fandom without any of that and it leaves me cold.

But I also don't see it that often so I'm mostly just 'meh' and scroll along when it does crop up.

Re: Why is A/B/O still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'll probably try my hand at one just because I want an excuse to make a lot of characters all fuck without needing lots of explanation.

I do hate that every time I seem to click on a promising one it has to turn into worldbuilding that feels like BabyFan's First Morality Fic About Why Social Discrimination Is Wrong.

Re: Why is A/B/O still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-25 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it too. I don't think I would hate it quite as much if there wasn't the very high chance of mpreg in every single one of those stories. But damn, the mpreg is omnipresent and often untagged because it's just ~expected to be there, no need to tag it~.

Do you like anything, or do you just like complaining about things other people like? Yesterday it was rivals romance, now this.

At least it's generally well-labeled, so I can scroll past it and keep searching for something relevant to my interests.
