This is BOB from Twin Peaks. He's not an actual person but some kind of demonic manifestation of ongoing intergenerational child abuse. He appears in the show's most terrifying and awful moments, all of which are major spoilers.

Now's a good time to watch it. Netflix is making a revival series coming out I think next month, which means there might be secrets/spoilers in future F!S's. And hey there's only around 30 episodes, and it's super trippy!

I kind of wish I hadn't seen Carnivàle before I saw Twin Peaks, not because they are set in the same universe (they aren't, but there's an overlapping actor which makes it theoretically possible), but because of thematic similarities. And a few stylistic ones, but Twin Peaks is more surreal-- like actual surrealism surreal, not ~ooh it's arty~ surreal.

I watched the show as a kid. I didn't really understand what he was, other than demonic and terrifying. He haunted my dreams for years. Thanks for reminding me of him (No NO NO NONNONONONONONO!)

I think I read somewhere that the actor was a technician on the crew and someone thought he looked weird and creepy crouching in the corner of the set so they had him play the part.

OP, I may not agree, but I have to say your secret made my day.

I do love the story behind BOB's physical appearance in the show. Like, the backstory is the one thing that helped negate the nightmare fuel for me.

The guy who played Bob was originally a set dresser who accidentally appeared in the mirror at the end of the pilot. David Lynch decided to keep it and made the set dresser Bob.

I mean...are we talking about BOB himself and what BOB does or are we talking about the actor? I do find the whole thing morbidly fascinating which I guess can cross over into Wrong stuff sometimes but...it's BOB!
