The way some fandom gets so over precious about always being nice. Sometimes, if you want a comm to remain active, you gotta have the freedom to tell a dozy fucker to kill themselves and not have your post deleted, froze, or doxxed to the local fuzz by some snooping bastard fucker.

Also please stop using US police ranks in the UK centred fandoms unless you are writing a Dempsey and Makepeace fic.

Eh, I don't agree that personal attacks are necessary for a community to thrive. I've known a lot of communities that were fine with that rule and have plenty of discussion (and usually the trolls just need to get creative to stay within the rules.)

I do think that fandom needs more welcome debate to thrive though. In recent years I've seen a lot of backlash towards any negative opinion at all (not a personal attack, but like a critique of a book/show/movie/etc) and anyone who is negative is labeled a "hater" even if they really like said fandom. Now that is the type of shit I think needs to stop, if you don't want to debate or critique, then stay out of the convo but let fans discuss.

I am so turned off when a post will be about Character A, and then right at the end, the OP will slip in a dig about Character B (or pairing A and bashing pairing B). It has nothing to do with the rest of the post. I just want someone to write meta or squee about a character on his or her own without it being at the expense of another character. It always leaves me feeling a little less love for the original Character (or pairing) A.

The shift towards politics and the absolute bullshit and ridiculous wank that happens from people badly applying political theories while trying to one up and prove their moral righteous to their peers. I'm in fandom to relax, so I don't really give a shit about your politics and I honest to god don't believe that shipping or racebending is in anyway shape or form actual political activism.

Yeah, I've heard all the arguments before. "the personal is political so" (haha no this shit affects me too that's why I don't want hear anymore about it especially from idiots who have a half-assed understanding of what's actually going on) and "fandom used to really bigoted" (maybe, but this obsession with ideological purity and lack of understanding that fiction =/= reality puts actual Crusades to shame)

Any why is every profile now a glorified a/s/l list? Don't you guys have anything actually interesting about you, because your sexual orientation sure ain't.

It's only happened once so I'm not sure if it's enough of a "thing" to qualify as a pet peeve, but years ago I was part of a comm that basically started to self-destruct. tl;dr short, they started deleting threads for no reason and making "jokes" when people asked what happened, and I later learned the admins didn't even want the forum anymore. Why not just hand it over to new people, instead of self-destructing? It left me with unpleasant memories of an otherwise pretty great site.

This is mostly Bioware specific, but applies to some other games as well. People getting all up in arms about choices you make in RPGs. "If you choose option A you're an oppressor who probably eats kittens in real life", "if you romance character B you support abuse and should be locked up", and so forth.

I am one of those weirdos who roleplay in their roleplaying games (crazy huh?) so when I pick an asshole option it's because I play my character as an asshole, not because I want to fap at the suffering of pixels (oddly enough, less vitriol gets thrown towards Sims players who delete pool ladders). But nope, for these people, making certain chioces will automatically mean you're the antichrist. In fact, it doesn't even need to be the asshole option, just the option they personally didn't pick.

People who complain about not being able to find the kind of fic they want in a way that suggests they think it is somehow a problem with other people. "Why don't people write gen/my kinks/my OTP??" Um, because they don't feel like it? It's free online fanfic, not the WPA Writers Project or the BBC or some other tax/fee-supported thing. Fic authors do not have to satisfy everyone and no one has to defend why they aren't writing what you want, and it's not a question of skill.

Same with people being convinced there must be lots of the fic they want out there and it's the archive's fault they can't find it. I'm sure there's fic that gets catalogued improperly (which is the writer's fault), but if there were really that much of it, some of it would get through to you. I've been reading fanfic online since before ff.net existed, when it was fandom-specific archives and personal websites with no tagging systems or drop-down menus. I still found fic to read - not always fic with every damn check box satisfied, but I still had fic to read. Most likely, if you can't find the kind of fic you want, then there is very little of the fic you seek out there and you would not be satisfied even if you knew you had tracked down every last story in existence.

Fics where the author makes one half of their OTP ace, and the "happy ending" is that the other half decides that "true love doesn't need sex" and takes a vow of chastity so they can cuddle and bake cookies with their snookums for the rest of their lives. Coercing someone into changing their sexual orientation for you is not suddenly romantic because you're ace.
