The word you're look for is "filk", anon. It's been around for ages.

indeed.

OP

Yes, I know about Filk. But what I've seen is not nearly as professionally done as WRock. I've basically just seen people singing it at conventions and stuff. Not actually putting out professionally-made albums. That's what I'm interested in: quality music about fandoms that I can purchase and own.

It's out there.

Musical tastes are subjective, but studio-recorded filk is 100% a thing and a search term that is a lot more likely to find you what you want than just saying "I want music about fandoms".

The Protomen are really good. Their original songs are inspired by the Mega Man franchise. They also have an album of songs from the 1980s that they have covered during their live shows plus a recording from when they did a tribute show to Queen.

I'd thought filks were just when you take an existing song and rewrite the lyrics to be about fandom stuff. TIL.

Isn't filk pre-existing songs rewritten to be about fandom?

In any case it's not the same.

Wizard Rock was an entire community, a sort of mini sub-culture within fandom with its own festivals and everything. It was a lot more than that too. It's... quite difficult too describe. As someone who was involved in it back in the day, it's not like anything I've ever seen or experienced before in fandom and it's not like anything I've seen or experienced since tbh.
