I dunno, mine are split up because it's bits of a whole, not a whole story. Like different scenarios in an uncertain timeline, united by one theme?

do you post them as separate fics, or as chapters of one work?

(Because to me the former always comes across as the author trying to take up shelf space, especially if the fics involve a small set of characters.)

In above commenter's comment, they SHOULD be posted as separate works. I'd be annoyed as a reader if I clicked on a multi-chaptered thing and it turned out to be twenty only mildly related things.

If they are about the same characters or pairings, KEEP IT IN ONE STORY. You can make 'Destiel Drabbles' or whatever you want to call them.

So if you legit had 20 one shots that just happened to feature the same pairing or characters, you'd post it as one multi-chaptered thing, and then have to have 500 tags because they're all only related by the pairing/character?

As a reader, if I searched a pairing or specific tag and then had to skim 20 chapters to find the ONE fic I wanted to read, I'd be annoyed as hell and just backspace and not read.

Yes, that's super annoying. I don't click on those on principle, even if there was that one fic I'd be interested in.

But people seem to like this style of posting. Those fic collections clog up the top positions in pretty much all the big fandoms.

Ugh, no! Same character or pairing, if they're not related at all, they should be posted as separate works. Nothing is more annoying than wading through a collection of unrelated fics to find the few things you want to read. Some authors are nice enough to post an index to make the search easier, but it's still clunky and not what chaptered fic is meant to be.

Mmm... separate fics under one "series" because it doesn't work as a chaptered fic, since they don't connect as a whole story

Jesus, that is the kind of shit that makes trudging through AO3 archives such a chore. I miss the days when that sort of crap wouldn't even qualify for an archive site, and an author would be run off of one on a rail if they tried it, that is stuff for mailing lists and personal sites. Put it on your tumblr and start a forum thread for it instead.

Ok, to each their own and all that. *shrugs* I didn't put it all in one because it'd not one story, but that's totally up to you and others if it's not your dish. This was an experiment for me to write an interconnecting series of stories. If I saw a story that was one with chapters that didn't click together, I'd be annoyed, but again, that's how I see it? Opposite opinions and all that don't end the world. <3

Shit, you sound like a pretentious fuck. Running off an author because some precious little snowflake didn't like how their stories were posted? God, the entitlement is staggering.

Yeah, that's how I'd post them, too. Standalone fics that are set in the same universe and sometimes connect or refer to each other? Those definitely make the most sense as separate fics posted into a series.
