it's not true of literally 100% of anime, but it does seem like a major problem with the genre in general

anime is capable of telling straight stories, sure, it's just that like 90% of the time the people who make anime decide to tell stories about incesty imouto-chans instead, even if they start with an interesting concept

DA I'd say 90% is an exaggeration.

Yes it's definitely a problem and I hate when I come across series like that without knowing beforehand, but there's a ton of anime out there that isn't like that.

If that was 90% of anime I would have given up anime long ago, but there are some good stories in anime. I'd even argue it has a leg up on the western animation industry because they don't limit their stories the same way the western industry does.

I mean, maybe 90% is high. I admit that I haven't done the statistical calculations here. I would say it's endemic to the industry though.

Calling anime a "genre" suggest that you've only been watching one genre of anime and you think all anime is that genre with those few exceptions... which actually, aren't exceptions to the "anime genre," but are the few anime you've seen that aren't in the genre you keep coming back to watching.

As for your "genre," avoid shonen fantasy anime based on light novels.

I think it's genuinely tricky to figure out what word to use here, and I acknowledge that "genre" isn't a perfect fit, but I think it's the best option available. Certainly, it's more accurate than calling it a medium, because what's distinctive about anime compared to other examples of animation is the specific cultural context that it comes out of and the varied collection of styles, topics, modes, approaches, etc that it has in common. And I think that anime has also been distinctively influenced - certainly in the last 20 years - by a fairly specific, coherent otaku fanbase.

It's not that I don't agree with that criticism, but that basically applies to most mainstream movies, TV shows, and games. Well, minus the imouto-chans, maybe, but in regards to female characters in general having no purpose but to be sexy and also in love with the main male protagonist. I don't think it's an anime problem so much as a "sex sells to our target demographic" (especially when that target demographic is teen boys). Anime isn't the only medium to ever have issues with forgoing plot to give fap material to 14-year-old boys who've just recently discovered their dicks.

DA I agree with this, I think more then anything there's just a problem with fanservice in anime and a lot of it being connected to the overall sexism in the entertainment industry.

Anime at least gives some fanservice of male characters as well and tries to target a female audience at times, I wouldn't say it's exactly equal but it's more then some industries do.

My only personal issue is that I don't want any of it, I can tolerate it since I've been watching anime long enough but I tend to find fanservice more embarrassing then sexy.

It's especially true of light-novel based stuff, though. Most of the time the shittiest anime stories I've seen tend to come from light novels, and it's rare that I see a light-novel-based story that doesn't devolve into bullshit haremy stuff.
Not that ALL of them are like that, but it's reached the point where if I see that a series was based off a light novel, I am leery of it. Especially if it looks like there's a dark-haired male lead with several female secondaries.
