It's especially true of light-novel based stuff, though. Most of the time the shittiest anime stories I've seen tend to come from light novels, and it's rare that I see a light-novel-based story that doesn't devolve into bullshit haremy stuff.
Not that ALL of them are like that, but it's reached the point where if I see that a series was based off a light novel, I am leery of it. Especially if it looks like there's a dark-haired male lead with several female secondaries.
