I'm not going to Pride this year. It's $25 for one day or $35 for the weekend, and it's turned into a fucking music festival.

LGBTQ teens are still ending up homeless because their bigot parents kick them out, trans people have virtually no protections on the job, queer women, queer people of color, and trans people have higher rates of poverty, trans women of color are being murdered at a horrifying rate, but hey, let's have a giant party so that a bunch of under-thirties with plenty of disposable income can celebrate how awesome it is to be them.

Oh dang, where are you that you have to pay to get in? I don't disagree with your sentiment (I'm p salty that a lot of people kind of... I don't want to say "gave up" but certainly cooled their jets about LGBTQ rights after same-sex marriage was legalized), but it's kind of uniquely shitty to make Pride a pay-to-get-in thing.

I'm in L.A. There's going to be a protest march, though. I'm planning on going to that instead.

My city's is in October. Not much of a fee yet, we're still small.

I think both you and a lot of Pridegoers miss the point of what it's about for some other people. For some people it's just a fun party to show off how it's great fun and games to be queer and are clueless about how much worse other people under the LGBT umbrella have it. But lots of other people participate because it still is that bad for them, and Pride is the only relatively safe time to say a "fuck you, I'm still not letting you ruin all my happiness" to the world.

Having to pay to get in is bullshit though.

How dare it not be about solving problems and instead feeling fucking validated and not having to worry about said problems for a little while.
