Semi-inspired by #9- headcanons/fanon

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-06-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any particular headcanons that you have that your fandom seems to disagree with you on? Or any common headcanons/fanon in your fandom that you think contradicts canon? Or just any particular thing that isn't explicit in canon, but you are convinced is implied?

I don't agree with the fanon that Elrond considers Maglor his dad or would call him as such, or that Elrond hates his dad. I also don't agree with the fanon that Elrond considers himself Noldor.

I kind of agree? I mean, I don't think he hated Maglor. I do think he loved him and that there was a familial relationship there. But he always knew who his father was and why his father left. So I think he could love Maglor without seeing him as his father and that he still loved his father too.

Yeah, I definitely don't think he hated him (it says "love grew between them as little may be thought" so obviously he doesn't hate him) and I can see him seeing Maglor as family, like a close cousin, but not a substitute for his dad. I mostly see this kind of anti-Earendil/Maglor-as-dad from Feanorian-apologists, who seem incapable of liking something without denigrating someone else.

Yes, I agree. Feanorian apologists bug me. I like the Feanorians. Well, I like Maglor, Maedhros, and Celebrimbor. But all of them were flawed and most of them did horrible things. I think it is possible to like and explore complex characters without excusing all their mistakes. And I don't get being Anti-Earendil. He had to go or Melkor would have won. Then everyone would be dead or worse. I'm sure leaving his family was incredibly hard. But he did it to protect them, to protect everyone. How is that not noble?

They're so delusional. I saw a huge wank once where the apologists blamed the First Kinslaying on the Teleri, saying that because the Noldor helped build the Havens out of friendship years ago, the Teleri owed the Noldor the use of their ships. They said the Noldor were justified in attacking them because the Teleri refused. I just O_o.

I've always seen Earendil as being like a soldier who has to leave for war. He is putting the good of his people before his own self-interests (as a leader should). I'm sure he'd love to have stayed with his family. I'm also sure Elrond completely understands.

That's exactly how I think of Earendil, as a soldier, too. And I'm absolutely sure it was intentional considering Tolkien himself was a soldier and much of his war experience shows up in his writings. Not that I always agree with Tolkien on everything, but you have to understand where he's coming from to understand his writing. And in this instance, I do agree with him. Earendil's actions were noble.

Spoilers for the ending of Final Fantasy XV

I believe all four died in the end because that campfire scene doesn't make any sense otherwise. I feel like the majority of the fandom thinks only Noct died and the others survived.

Wait, other people actually think that? I thought the implication was pretty clear that they were all dead in that scene.

I thought so too.
Now, I can't be completely sure if they all really believe it or if they just choose to completely ignore it for shipping purposes. But I absolutely have seen more than a few who argue that the other three survived.
(Prompto, at the very least, shouldn't have survived it considering his nature and the fact that all demons were purged in the end, which would mean no more MTs.) But generally, I think that camp scene left very little room for interpretation (especially with all the "well, we're all here now, this isn't quite how I imagined this would end" but this may be due to translation and I haven't seen the original dub for this scene.)

I'll one-up you: I don't think anyone survived. I think Noct was caught in a shitty power play by the gods and they used him to pretty much vaporize all living things. Which is part of why Noct taking the throne doesn't feel heroic at all; it's brutal, it's sad, it's unfair.

Even more damning: they made such a point in the last chapter about how the survivors had all fled to Lestallum, packing it to the gills, and then they showed such a distinct shot of a completely empty city in the dawn. It really feels like a "cleansed by fire" sort of situation.

I could see that but can't completely believe it.
But then again, 10 years without sunlight shouldn't have had anything surviving anyway so...

There is a lot of insistence in parts of the J/7 part of Voyager fandom (and possibly in other parts of the fandom as well, but I wouldn't know because I pretty much just stay in my lane) that since Seven's never had sex her hymen must be firmly intact (after all, the only way to break it is by sexual penetration, obviously, and the only way we the readers can know that she's a Pure and Untouched Virgin(TM) is through the obligatory "breaking the hymen" portion of the first sex scene). And also there's no way that the borg would've even touched her uterus and ovaries, much less removed them to make room for more cybernetic upgrades, and even if they did the Doctor would've just automatically made her a new set from the get-go without a word, because heaven forbid that she be unable to get pregnant with Janeway's magic love baby.

Yeah, I used to get a lot of shit for daring to challenge this most holy of headcanons back in the day.
