Re: Are you putting off going to the doctor?

I'm scheduled for a Pap test and I really don't want one (yes, I know it's important, but ugh), so I've been avoiding my doctor and I keep getting emails saying that I'm due for a physical. I've also been waking up to a racing heartbeat and I'm scared that it might be something really bad.

My sympathies go out to you. I've only one had one attempt at a pap smear and it ended up being a failure because I started to cry.

Not my doctors fault at all. I was very nervous about the entire thing and she did everything in her power to make it as comfortable as possible for me.

I actually haven't had one before and I feel super queasy about it. My doctor's great and told me I could put it off for a few years and I'm trying to convince myself that it's no big deal, but I'm really not looking forward to it at all.

I had one before and honestly just remember it being uncomfortable while it was done and being completely fine after.

Do it, and then you can buy yourself more time before the next one!

At my last physical my doctor pretty much looked me in the eyes and went, "You're 33. Suck it up, buttercup," and handed me a stack of OBGYN business cards with the one his daughter goes to circled.

Six months later, here I am still having not sucked it up. It's intimidating! No one's seen my lady parts before! Should I worry about vag maintenance beforehand? Is there some kind of protocol? I mean, I'm sure they don't want to have to wade through a jungle to find the important parts, but is it weird to trim the hedges the night before? Do you do it a week before so it doesn't seem like you tried to make your bits pretty for them? Why am I fixated on grooming when someone's going to shove cold metal where no one's been before!

This is how I'm feeling too! My friend told me to just think of my lady parts as any other body part (like the ears or mouth) and that the doctor has seen tons of vaginas, but no one's been anywhere near mine and the mere idea of shoving a metal clamp thing in there totally freaks me out. I'm weirdly modest too, so that adds an extra layer of insecurity to this whole thing.

Do your regular washing up before your appointment and don't worry about it. The simple fact that you cleaned up before going in will be nice, since people sometimes just don't care to do that (don't ask me why). And if you don't normally trim up, don't - they truly do not care, and it won't impact your visit at all.

The cold metal is actually warmed, usually - they're so much better about that than they used to be.

And if you say 'stop! i need a minute!' they will stop and give you a minute.
Good luck!

Oh I just remembered I've been avoiding a physical too. I'm too good at avoidance. I honestly forget these things after a while. But I'm sick of blood tests. I come close to passing out every time I have blood drawn and it's miserable.

I don't mind getting blood drawn, but my little sister is terrified of needles and puts off physical exams because she hates getting blood drawn.
