The Big Misunderstanding that could be solved in less than two minutes if the characters involved would JUST FUCKING TALK TO EACH OTHER instead of immediately assuming the worst about the other.

I especially hate when we're supposed to feel sorry for a character who Can't Tell Anyone the Truth, so instead watches all this shit unfold.

If he or she is meant to be a villain, that's one thing - it's another thing when it's meant to be sympathetic.

Oh god yes. And the stilted way the writer/director has to phrase everything the characters say because normal conversation would include whatever it is everyone is being mad about. Someone says stuff that sounds evasive and sulky and instead of the other party saying something like "wat you talking about, mate" they start getting all stilted and avoiding actually asking about the most suspicious conversation ever and not even in a smart I know that you know that I know type of way, like they are supposed to not notice how suspicious the whole thing sounds. And it is usually supposed to be a smart person or experienced leader who is not noticing the artificial cadence and word choice.

Oh yeah this one is annoying, especially so when irl you'd just tell the other person what's up, but no. We gotta drag this shit out for drama and gah, stop it for the love of god.

It bothers me how much hate this trope gets because it's not just a trope, it's how people really are. So it's more like fiction being realistic about a common source of human conflict.

I mean I think a lot of the time the trope is just used to stretch out the drama without regard to characterization. But yeah, you're right. It is true to life. I guess for me it's one of those things that's just really frustrating to watch if you're not actually involved with all the personal complications because, logically, it has a very simple solution.

No it isn't. It is clunky, and the conversations artificially structured so that nobody states the obvious or asks obvious questions. It is not realistic at all.

If and only if the scripting stinks.

I hate admitting this, but I know from personal experience that it's a world class way to drive people up a wall, and is also the idiot foundation of a good many troll threads.

Every time I hear people complain about this trope, I keep thinking, "Boy, they would hate 'Frasier', then", 'cause that show used that trope a LOT :p.

Course, in that show's case, they were often poking fun at how silly and ridiculous that kind of miscommunication could be, I think, so...

I don't mind the trope myself, but I can see where it would frustrate others. Not everyone can pull that trope off well, but then again, that complaint can apply to any trope, really.
