LEAST FAVORITE TROPE

The "Darker and Edgier" trope.

Those using it think they are making something more mature and adult, but too often they are making the property more juvenile with childish excess of violence and profanity. I'm just at the point that I'm sick of it. We've had 16 years of it now and I'm done and ready to go back to embracing a bit of lighter and campier style of storytelling instead.

Yes. I like a good dark story when it is appropriately dark. Dark and edgy just for the sake of dark end edgy, though, rarely works particularly well. Not everything needs to be this dark. Some things can be happy.

Honestly, one thing I love so much about Tolkien is that even though his stuff can be very, very dark, there are still touches of levity and lightness. He understood the need for hope. And that's what I think a lot of modern dark media is missing: hope.

Revivals/sequels

I agree, and am adding that I especially hate this with revivals and sequels. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Archie, Harry Potter... at least Girl Meets World remained cute and fun.

The mentor who dies so the protagonist can outgrow him. It feels very Logan's Run. (I've seen it argued that the mentor needs to die so the protagonist no longer has someone to solve her problems, but if the mentor was ever capable of solving the protagonist's problems, then why isn't he the protagonist?)

Because not all protagonists are the Big Damn Hero to start.

I don't find this at all strange.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE TROPE

it straight up comes from the Hero's Journey (thanks a fucking lot Joeseph Campbell), which I studied in college, but I can't remember all the tiny details of his explanation. He coined it based on a common trope already in centuries of mythology, so it's not like it's a new trope. But I swear to god we're so over it and need to move on and couch our heroes' journeys in better framework. tl;dr I agree but check out commentary on the Hero's Journey to figure out where this trope comes from.

It would be neat to see a movie where the wise, old mentor actually turns out to be the protagonist, and the plucky young person you thought was being set up to be the hero gets left behind (the mentor can have a sidekick, but someone less expected than the plucky young person).

I'd like to see somebody get completely turned off from a tsundere. Not thinking the fact that they might love them outweighs the shitty behaviour.

The Big Misunderstanding that could be solved in less than two minutes if the characters involved would JUST FUCKING TALK TO EACH OTHER instead of immediately assuming the worst about the other.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE TROPE

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I especially hate when we're supposed to feel sorry for a character who Can't Tell Anyone the Truth, so instead watches all this shit unfold.

If he or she is meant to be a villain, that's one thing - it's another thing when it's meant to be sympathetic.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE TROPE

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god yes. And the stilted way the writer/director has to phrase everything the characters say because normal conversation would include whatever it is everyone is being mad about. Someone says stuff that sounds evasive and sulky and instead of the other party saying something like "wat you talking about, mate" they start getting all stilted and avoiding actually asking about the most suspicious conversation ever and not even in a smart I know that you know that I know type of way, like they are supposed to not notice how suspicious the whole thing sounds. And it is usually supposed to be a smart person or experienced leader who is not noticing the artificial cadence and word choice.

Oh yeah this one is annoying, especially so when irl you'd just tell the other person what's up, but no. We gotta drag this shit out for drama and gah, stop it for the love of god.

Re: LEAST FAVORITE TROPE

(Anonymous) 2017-06-10 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It bothers me how much hate this trope gets because it's not just a trope, it's how people really are. So it's more like fiction being realistic about a common source of human conflict.

Love triangles, mostly because I very rarely see them written well and it's usually blindingly obvious which person is going to be picked by the character choosing.

Cut to scene of them lovingly dancing.

A/B/O

The A/B/O version I made up with a friend when it's just some people having interesting sets of genitals and times of increased libido is chill, but the emotional/physical dependency and having some characters reduced as fuck machines is just eeeeeugh.

Not sure how much of a trope this is but I hate it when a Wife gets extremely jealous and starts acting like her Husband is going to leave her just because he acknowledged another woman (like literally just saying "Hi" or something mundane like that.)

Also, the whole "a straight man and a straight woman can't just be friends" trope.
