"The Babadook is gay!" No, it's not. It's a metaphor for someone's depression. Terrorizing a suburban mom doesn't make it gay, nor do all gay or bi people want to embrace the role of being some monstrous thing that disrupts "normal" society.

Mostly this is a joke. At least, outside of thinkpieces. It's fun.

"Muh" anything. Why do people write this "word?"

Racism; desire to be part of the same in-group as racists

Yeah, I don't mind the Babadook thing as a joke. It just started to bug me after I saw a few people trying to make it into a serious thing.

And partly, that's because I'm getting tired of the idea that if you're gay or bi you really should embrace being this kind of... outsider or "other" that normal people hate. I've been seeing that on Tumblr quite a bit. It just feels like another box to be shoved into. I'd rather NOT be seen that way.

Fair enough. I think it's mostly fun still as a joke. Anything beyond that is definitely more complicated.

The reason for the joke was because the movie got accidentally listed in the LGBT category on a streaming site (I think Netflix?).

How the fuck do you get racism out of muh?

As far as I'm aware, it comes out of extremely racist propaganda that was used as a joke on 4chan, and then the "Muh x" phrase became a meme off of that, and that's its source. Maybe people use it in a way that's detached from that but that's its association for me.

This image particularly (warning, obviously extremely racist):

Yeah, I don't know if "muh" is inherently racist, but it sure seems to be used primarily by racists.

I thought it was about entitlement!

I thought "muh" was supposed to sound like a slow or "retarded" person talking. So it would be ableist, not racist.

Nope. Racist caricature of a black person.

And here I thought it was a classist caricature of a redneck!

I did too. Today we learned, I guess.

ayrt
I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to believe every rando on the internet who cries racist.

I agree, and I'm pretty sure the "muh" thing started with rednecks ("git outta muh c'untry" springs to mind especially), but I'm sure it's been coopted the same way Pepe the frog has been.

OP

I mean, it's a 3-letter word that's closely related to a version of a common English word. It probably has more than one origin. The sense in which I'm familiar with it is in a 4channy, video game sense. In that context, I believe that it comes from a racist caricature of black people. I think that's the most important context for Internet usage. But I'm sure there's plenty of other contexts it's used in.
