Addressing people by a generic name you decided on in order to be condescending. E.g. "Shut up, Cindy" "See the thing is, Sharon..." "Fuck you, Chad" etc. I don't... get it?

Wait, so people doing this call people by some random name that isn't their actual name? I've never seen/heard that, but I don't get it either.

exactly what you said - being condescending.

Agreed.

I think maybe they're supposed to be stereotypical baby-boomer names, so they're meant to imply the person is old, outdated, and just doesn't "get it?" Like it's always names like Sharon, Karen, Susan, Cindy and so on that are more common on people who are 40+.

Also, they're all stereotypically white and middle-class.

White, yeah. Middle class, I'm not so sure.

Middle to upper-middle?

Re: Memes you're getting tired of

Uh, no. More like the other way.

I mean, some of them are just... not associated with any particular class IMO (like Susan), but Sharon, Cindy, etc. seem more on the working-class side.

that's weird because I'd definitely say that opposite. Maybe it's a cultural or regional thing or something.

Sure, Jan.

It's condescending because you don't know their real name. Like that bit about how saying "who's this clown" is a double insult because it implies they're not even a well-known clown.

Also a lot of names just sound funny to say disapprovingly.

I thought it was just basically calling someone a member of whatever group, usually in a negative way. Like, for instance, if someone says "Hi, Phoebe!" their basically calling you a stuck-up bitch, since the name Phoebe is usually associated with rich bitches (according to them, not saying this is true.)

While not entirely reliable, it's often a pretty good sign that the person in question is running an asshole blog.
