My favorite shelter cat bit me on the mouth today. A staff member was in the room and saw it, I downplayed how much it hurt and the fact that it was bleeding a bit. It only slightly broke the skin. And I knew he'd be put in quarantine if it was recorded. And he's already been there for more than two months. He needs a home.

He's the sweetest cat ever. There were just a ton of people in the room looking at kittens, he got a bit overwhelmed, and nipped. Not a big deal as far as I'm concerned and not something that should go on his permanent record. He's still my favorite cat and I'd adopt him in a heartbeat if I could.

You need to go to the doctor. Cat bites are no fucking joke. My sister got bit on the hand by a cat and she got a really bad infection.

yeah. my boyfriend got bit by a cat once and had to take antibiotics for it. I read that's common.

THIS! I had a bite like that and needed three different cures with antibiotics before I got better. Don't treat this lightly.

I did, actually. They cleaned it, but didn't think I needed antibiotics.

Good! Keep an eye on it. I hope your kitty find a home.

what do you need antibiotics for, tetanus?

Cat mouths have bacteria, and the fact that cat teeth are so sharp and pointy makes it easy for them to get an infection deep in the skin. Cat bites tend to heal on the surface first, which can trap pockets of infection underneath.

Not to be harsh, but you're letting your feelings get in the way of common sense. If this sweetheart of a cat can get overwhelmed and bitey with you, it can get overwhelmed and bitey with other people as well. If I adopted this cat with the shelter's assurance that it had a clean record and it get overwhelmed and bit my kid, I'd be furious if I knew a shelter employee/volunteer had had the exact same experience and hid that information. You're a lawyer, right? So you tell us - if that became known, what are the odds that you and/or the shelter could be held liable by an angry parent?

That can happen with ANY animal though, even one with a spotless record. That's just something you have to understand if you want to own an animal, that they can bite if pushed far enough, no matter how sweet they are. You have to teach your kids that it's a living creature and not a toy they can pull on or throw around (not saying this is always the case, but kids can be rough sometimes, without even realizing it) and they have to be gentle, and if the animal is getting angry or stressed to leave them alone until they calm down (this can apply to everyone, not just children.)

This is absolutely true and I don't dispute it. But it doesn't change the fact that once an animal bites someone - even under stressful circumstances - any future owners are safer knowing that this is the case and that the animal in question requires extra attention and careful handling in situations like that. Wanting to get the cat adopted isn't a great excuse for hiding details about its history that could affect someone's decision. Giving someone a heads up is not just courtesy, it'll help ensure the cat goes to a person who understands its needs.

And you notice how philstar22 hasn't answered me? It's because she knows full well that there's a very good chance she could be legally at fault by failing to disclose this information, should that cat get stressed out and bite someone else and should they discover she failed to disclose this incident. Now mind you, she's safe so long as nobody finds out she got bitten, but unfortunately one of the shelter staff members was an eyewitness. philstar22 needs to hope that her co-worker didn't notice her bleeding and doesn't realize she wasn't telling the whole truth about how hard the cat bit her, or better yet that the co-worker forgets this incident entirely. She's looking at it from an emotional point of view, I'm merely pointing out the liability and risk.

DA

I don't know if philstar is affiliated with the shelter. Didn't she say she just visits for her own mental health?

I don't think you're being fair. Virtually any cat or dog can nip when they get super stressed and overwhelmed. You'd have to be pretty dumb to expect that any cat you adopted never bites under any circumstance; part of having a pet is recognizing this. It's one thing to pretend an aggressive animal isn't aggressive, but a cat that gets overwhelmed in a stressful situation biting? I mean, not saying op should be lying, but when a shelter animal's life is on the line...

Re: confessions

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I never said anything about expecting an adopted cat to never bite anyone under any circumstance, though. And it's true that virtually any cat or dog can nip under special circumstances. However, thanks to philstar22's discovery, it's now KNOWN that this particular cat bit its handler while under stress - and bite hard enough to break the skin and draw blood. Not disclosing that to any potential owner is irresponsible and unfair to the animal as well as the owner.

Re: confessions

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
nah it's not. any owner should assume that they have to treat their cat respectfully and give it space when it gets stressed. it would be unfair and irresponsible not to.

Re: confessions

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, what now? I've adopted rescue dogs before and responsible rescues are VERY honest with you about the dog's history and potential problems, if they know it. Of course every animal should be treated respectfully, but if an animal has a history of behavioral issues, they may need careful handling above and beyond what you normally do for an animal who does not have a track record of behavioral issues.

If a rescue lies about an animal's past history and behavioral issues, they are 100% to blame if there's an incident later and the animal pays for that mistake. THAT'S why they disclose these things.

Never own pets. Never. They get stressed. They get overwhelmed. They fight back when they are. Just like a kid.

So fuck off and never own pets, because you come off as the kind of person who'd scream and kick and abandon an animal that peed itself from being too stressed.

Re: confessions

I would do exactly the same as you. :( Sometimes cats just bite, especially when they are stressed. They're semi-wild animals sometimes, and that's okay. I wish this kitty a good home quickly, and he's lucky to have you to give him love.
