I agree to some extent, though I've come across a lot of people who had no idea that there was such a filter there.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, it's not exactly a good or easy-to-use search

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Easier than AO3's.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Like. I have no interest in turning this into a pissing match, AO3 and FF are both fine to me, if you prefer FF that's super chill. They definitely have different styles, and search doesn't matter much if you don't like the fic that search finds.

But AO3's search is just way better than FF's search. It's not even a question.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
People still use FF.net?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Found the AO3 snob. Hey, it is your archive that is thought of as trash now, kiddo. All those OC/SI sex fics, page after page after page of drabbles by the same person for the same pairing, and the tag spam, oh god the tag spam, AO3 is basically tumblr now.

Okay, but who still uses FF.net when AO3 exists??????

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
A number of authors still post to both places.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
DA - I do both because I get a fair number of comments and hits on both. There's not really any reason not to aside from the additional couple of minutes it takes to cross post.

For me, I tend to get more reviews on ff.net vs nothing but kudos on AO3. While I appreciate both, it's also nice to know what people actually think of what they read.

It's also used for sorting because some big pre-Ao3 fandoms have a lot of fic there, but not on Ao3. I know there was drama a couple years ago when I think it was Stargate Atlantis got into Yuletide as a tiny fandom, because all the fic for it was ff.net or other websites.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
You just reminded me there's probably a treasure trove of HP fic lurking in the bowels ff.net....

You've asked this before, and it's been answered before.

I was shocked before. I'll be shocked again. It's a crap site.

I will admit I am not a huge fan of FF.net for a number of reasons but there are some authors who ONLY post to ff.net and for some fandoms, it's still the only place to find most of the fic. For one of my fandoms, there are just over 3000 fics on AO3 but over 20 thousand on ff.net. I wish AO3 was the go to site for most fic, but sadly it is not.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Why would I switch to AO3????
My fandoms are barely represented there, I don't like the format, and I neither read nor write smut. There's no draw for me whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
As a reader and rarepair shipper my chances of finding fic are a lot higher on FF.net than on AO3. As a writer, my chances of getting favourites and comments are still a lot higher than on AO3. I'm posting to both sites, and the difference is remarkable.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Shouldn't this be Take it to comments?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Take It To Comments is when you're replying to a previous secret (especially if you do so by putting text over a screenshot of the other secret), not if you're repeating something you had previously said in a comment.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-19 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk if I'm imagining things, but are you maybe the anon who mentioned something like this a week or so ago? I remember someone mentioning a fic event host who denied the anon because supposedly the "pairing was too popular" but the host actually put the pairing in the "not include" filter instead.

I do still use FF.net since not all fic authors I follow post on AO3. I know I definitely use the without filters to get rid of characters I can't stand popping up.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
OP - That's me. I figured the amazement at trying to run a rarepair exchange but not actually knowing how to use searches correctly was worth making a secret about. They stuck to their insistence that the bottom check for Without was the correct checkmark, and the fact the search brought up a whole page of fic for other pairings was just false positives, but false positives were still included in the final numbers. I decided that was not worth it at all.

I remember this from the GC about a month ago.

I do agree though. Way to be a complete asshole, exchange people. Nice job of not paying attention and making yourselves look really fucking stupid.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-20 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The most frustrating thing is that search the pairing name? 23 fics. Search name/name 21 fics, name x name 20 fics. Search using the filters correctly? 20 fics. Click the without checkbox you get thousands. Yet obviously the without checkbox was the more accurate count for how many pairing fics there were.
