I think that what frustrated me the most about Harry and Ron regarding Hermione was how often they seemed to treat her like a know-it-all or just generally not appreciate the bookish parts of her personality.
As one of those types of girls growing up, I found it kind of sad to read. Especially because you know what, I had friends who were not NEARLY as bookish as I was, but sometimes they'd be like "Hey, Ketita, come here and tell us cool stuff about space" or whatever.

I may be misremembering the books - it's been a while since I read them - but as somebody who like waxing eloquent about stuff, I can't imagine being married to somebody who found that trait obnoxious or boring. Which is one of the reasons I wasn't crazy about the Ron/Hermione ship.
But I don't hate it.

I can understand that. A while back I was telling my friend about a paper I was working on and she commented that it sounded like a really boring topic and then quickly added "maybe not for intellectuals, I don't know". It was a bit deflating.

Ouch, that sucks. People can be so rude, sometimes.
It's like one time when I told somebody that I was working towards being a Professor of [Humanities subject], their answer was, "huh, no offense, but that doesn't sound so impressive".
I nearly sputtered in rage at them.

IDK,just having the title of professor sounds pretty awesome.

There's at least some of that in the books? but it's mostly early on, and it gets turned into something that's generally endearing pretty quickly

also, that kind of suspicion of braininess is definitely part of the school stories genre that Rowling is riffing on, and some would argue part of English-speaking culture more generally I guess?

I mean, Harry and Ron obviously know how useful Hermione's intelligence and booksmarts are and she saved their ass countless times but they did still get annoyed even later on.

Which is understandable, most kids find it bizarre that another kid looks forward to exams or reminds the teacher they had homework to turn in or get annoyed at being corrected all the time.

intelligence and book smarts being something to be feared (or at best, mocked) is a trope in real schools and in literature throughout large parts of the english speaking world and it needs to go away

I agree entirely

At the same time, so much of what's going on in Harry Potter - especially in the early books - is specifically about recapitulating specific tropes and narratives from school stories. I don't think that's an excuse but in my mind it does mitigate it somewhat.

I felt that way too the first time I read through them, but the second time I understood a bit better. Hermione IS a know-it-all. Being bookish is both her greatest strength and also her weakness. She's smart, so she thinks she's always right even when she's wrong about things.

But Hermione's brains are actually the thing about her that Harry and Ron respect the most. They tease her about it sometimes, but it's clearly just a joke once they get to know her. They go along with almost all of her OTT study plans and ideas throughout the books, and they never question that Hermione knows the solution to things.
