Job Searching and Character References

(Anonymous) 2017-06-25 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I have been searching for a job for quite a while.

I don't have any personal references. The applications usually want three people who are not related to you and have known you for at least a year. I don't have friends that I hang out with, just pen pals or online friends. I haven't kept in contact with former co-workers. I don't volunteer anywhere because I don't have money to pay for transportation. I used to volunteer with Girl Scouts and the Society for Creative Anachronism, but that was ten years ago. I am Atheist so I don't go to church. The local Atheist group just meets once a month at a local restaurant for dinner and I can't afford to go.

I don't know what to put down. My past jobs are no good either because my former bosses have quit or passed away and no one remembers I used to work there.

I am on the Autism spectrum and signed up for help with getting a job from Vocational Rehabilitation in early October. They said I qualified for help and assigned me a job coach, but the coach said that he can't help me because I live in H. County and they only help people from C. County. Living in H County was something I stressed to the VR caseworker beforehand because I didn't want to have trouble with getting help because of where I live. My case was sent back to the VR caseworker and that was in early March. I call or email the caseworker once a week, but when I do receive a response, it is a vague We're working on it. I can't drive due to mainly physical problems but also financial reasons, so that is another strike against me. Here a lot of jobs require a driver's license.

I am just so frustrated with everything.

Gosh I am sorry anon. Sounds like you are in a tough spot. It really sucks that VR isn't more helpful.

I'm sure you've already heard "check out at home transcription and data entry jobs" but that is the only advice I can think of. That or find people willing to lie for references, but that probably isn't actually good advice :/

Honestly, hiring managers rarely call your "personal" references. I've absolutely put down my online friends before, and not one of them has ever been called, and they report the same. So you're probably okay there, as far as just putting down your online friends!

I'm really sorry about the vocational rehab issues, though. That's frustrating for sure. :(

Online friends and pen pals are fine to include as references imo so long as they are actual friends to the point where they know real details about your life and stuff.

The last time I applied for a job, I couldn't think of enough people to add who spoke English and was a good reference. So I actually ended up including my cousin as a reference! We don't share a last name, and we weren't friends on Facebook or anything, so I figured even if the employer Googled him they wouldn't know we were related.

imo as someone who's been on the employer side of this... you are probably not applying for a job where character references are very important. Mostly, this boss is looking to see if you can fill out an application correctly. (Though, I would also say this is a good sign you need to do more social activities of some kind, if only bc it might help your job prospects. It doesn't even need to be volunteering. Even just doing something like finding a pen pal and studying on Duolingo can be a good leg up.)

It sounds like a bad situation all around, nonny. Hopefully your caseworker eventually comes through for you. :( Good luck!
