Re: Anyone got any tips for adopting a Death of the Author mindset?
This is a problem I've dealt with a lot, bc I'm gay and there's a lot of homophobic creators of things. I guess Ender's Game would be the perfect example. I thought it was a very liberal and queer-positive book and I was shocked to learn years later that Card is a hardline conservative bigot. But, even if I'd known that about him first, I still would see Ender's Game the same way.
Also, I've found that authors might try to push one thing and end up really pushing another view, too. Like, they make a movie about how racism is bad, but the movie itself is really racist like all those white savior dramas. Or all the chick flicks where people just need to give up all the things they enjoy and get married, well, to a more critical viewer often they reinforce that it's a BAD idea to give up everything you like just to get laid.
(And man, I am super fucking curious about what movie this is, dude! But I feel you about not wanting to get into some big Thing about it on F!S.)
Re: Anyone got any tips for adopting a Death of the Author mindset?
Its a film from last year called "the love witch" which liked to me to be a sexy horror in a 1960s filming style about a witch having lots ofnsexy and killing people. Totally my jam.
Then I read into it, and found that it's a film about how men are afraid of women, and women have more power than men. Suddenly I have all kinds of images about watching a film where every guy is a scumbag - Which isn't a problem in and of self, I watch loads of films where that is the case, but going into it knowing that's the point of the film, I worry if I'm going to be able to enjoy it, or if I'm going to feel like I'm being shit on for the entire length of the film.
That's probably all very stupid.
Re: Anyone got any tips for adopting a Death of the Author mindset?
Just watching the trailer it looks more like Kill Bill or The Craft, where the point is that the protagonist is awful too. But, if that's not what the creator intended then I understand your hesitation.
Still, I hope you enjoy it, man!

Yeah, I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and hope it doesn't make me regret it. Any other choice is stupid>
