I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say

Neither am I. Especially since OP is supposedly talking mainly about CW here. What does "Agent Carter" getting cancelled have to do with the CW's treatment of male versus female-led shows?

I think it's just the best and/or first example of a canceled "female-led show" that came to mind for OP.

I also am not 100% sold on their idea that The CW is regarded as programming for women because while that was certainly true of its predecessor The WB and definitely true in its earliest stages while Gossip Girl was one of its flagship shows, its shift toward focusing on niche programming and more paranormal, science fiction, and superhero shows has changed its demographics quite a bit.

If anything, as a lifelong fan of The WB and The CW, I've missed a lot of the showy, flashy, dramatic high school soap shows they used to have in abundance.

Possibly. And like you said elsewhere, it seemed to initially be a rant about male versus female-led shows in the industry in general. Just seemed to eventually veer off into a very specific tangent.

I haven't personally followed any of the shows that have been popular on the CW over the years (about the only thing I watch on there is "Whose Line"), but I do agree with you about demographic shifts based off what I've heard about the types of shows airing on there. Heck, I see a lot of people who aren't in their teens or 20s watching a lot of those shows. I can see where people might still think the CW is a female-oriented channel, 'cause of the general assumption that more women might watch it than men...but yeah, that doesn't mean the channel's programming is specifically targeted to women only.

I think an argument could be made.

DA

The CW does seem to have a higher proportion of female-led shows than the other networks (of course, it doesn't have as many shows). Given the make-up of the other networks' shows, that implies to me that they are deliberately courting female viewers.

I didn't realize it on first read, but seeing your comment, I, too, am confused about OP's point.

I think...I think OP's secret here is that they feel like a hypocrite because they're upset about the treatment of mainstream media marketed to women and how it's judged more harshly as a result of centering on and catering to women, but they really enjoy Reign's James I.

They enjoy Reign's James I so much, that if he were to become the focus of a spinoff show where he could be slashed with other dudes, OP would LOVE it and watch it and participate in its fandom, but they would do so all with the knowledge that they were contributing to the prioritization of male focused media and fandom.

If I were to give OP's secret a translated TL;DR, I'd say it's probably:

"I feel like a bad feminist for wanting this female-led show to spin off this male character in the lead where I can slash him with other dudes." It just gets bogged down in OP's focus on a larger social issue they perceive within the industry.

I mean, they don't actually need a show to slash James I with other dudes. James did enough of that himself. I grant that there probably is not a very large or active community out there writing X rated fanfic about James and his various boyfriends, though.

there's nothing really stopping anyone from slashing any historical figure. But a popular movie, book or tv show certainly increases the chance. More people would be intrigued by the character and set out to research him and discover they essentially have permission from "canon" (aka real life) to go for it.

But I've only seen one fic ever on this topic. Even though this is a relatively tame request compared to, say, George Washington tentacle sex, which is a thing which someone wrote

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say, I never imagined that I would ever read the phrase "George Washington tentacle sex."

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't know why I'm surprised by this anymore, but I am.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-27 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Op here that's exactly what I was trying to say. It did get bogged down.

And I did not want the show to end, and if my only option was "you as a viewer can stay in this world but only if you accept that you'll be watching a more male centric story" I would take that and yes, I would feel weird about it. But I would be having a blast at the same time.
