I too hate RPS, but I ship Johnny Rotten x Sid Viscious forever and forever.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
101. Truth is, I hate song fics. At the same time, I really really want to write some, because I hear music that would fit so perfectly. What I usually wind up doing is writing something in the spirit of the song, possibly even a few of the lyrics, but not in standard "here's some lyrics, here's a snippet, here's some more lyrics" format.
Why?
Because it looks bad. Because nine times out of ten, or maybe nineteen out of twenty, songfics are badly done. Sometime, it's a song that just, in no possible way can or should fit the characters, like using Green Day for a Snape-fic or something. Half the time, the lyrics quoted take up more space than the written material, the lyrics quoted in their entirety often repeat, if it's a song I don't know (or even one I do know) I just skip over the lyrics entirely, which begs the question of why they're there in the first place, and it seems like the writer is using a song to set the mood without setting it herself.
And really, most songfics I've read, even moreso than regular fics, just have bad writing.

That's not advice or anything, mind. Maybe you're one of the folks who can do it well. That's just what I, in general, find so bad about songfics.

103. That movie is my absolute favourite movie of all time. I say this as someone who has spent her life abhoring chick flicks. It's so much more than a "romantic comedy." It's just...perfect. If anyone can watch the adorble lad getting hoisted up by Liam Neeson at the end without just feeling uplifted, all warm and fuzzy, there's something wrong there.

105. Heck, I do that all the time. With a lot of different books. When my sister was younger, I read the first two and most of the third to her (plus the Hobbit), and I still regret that I never finished (she's way too old for it now).

112. It is. Well, the whole show is, kind of. But it's not exactly a "flex-your-acting-muscles" kind of show.

114. Two words: Gateway. Drug.

118. I'd watch it with you! I miss watching it with my roommates (on the other hand, I don't have to feel akward when I start rabidly fangirling certain things. Also, that pic fails, for obvious, tiny reasons).

120. Y'know what, I like it!

122. Lol. Word!

126. Why can't you in a general way, or why can't you and not be judged. Because I agree with that original secret 100%. Finding good fic is at best a tricky, elusive business, and if the writer is so kind as to inform me up front "hey, it sucks!" Well, then I know not to bother with it. If you think it sucks too much to go up, you don't put it up. If you want it up anyway, don't say it sucks. False modesty (or even real-but-whiny-modesty) is really just annoying. See Piro of Megatokyo and how he's managed to isolate half his fanbase.

135. Y'know, I'm tired of the "David Tennant is funny-looking/ugly" secrets. Not because I'm offended or anything--they make me lol, really. He is funny-looking. Heck, in that behind-the-scenes thing, his own mum pointed out that he's goggle-eyed (well, they were joking). But it's like people making the secrets think they're saying some new, novel and daring thing. Yeah, no. Most of his fans are aware that he's odd-looking. (I'd say ferret before rat, really). We just love him the same.

144. Well, if that's all it took...*sigh*

151. I've no idea who that is, but the only band I've heard that makes me think "Beatles!" but not "ARGH!" is Jet. I hope that's not them (I don't follow bandom, I just know that the songs I've heard have a fun, old-fashioned rock-and-roll vibe, and I like 'em).

103

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! I usually hate chick flicks as well. I mean, I love a nice handful of them (mostly ones for nostalgic value, like Titanic), but for the most part, movies like The Notebook and Sommersby drive me up a wall. But that movie...that movie was just brilliant. Everything about it fit so well, and so perfectly, that I bought it the day it came out, and I watch it every Christmas. :)

[identity profile] theminitank.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
103- I think alot of people (myself included) share that experience. Love Actually is truly a great, inspirational, and slightly underrated film.

108-THANK YOU!! I'm a huge fan on Indiana Jones, and could not stand what they did to the 4th movie...which everyone seems to be raving about! They developed the character in Last Crusade...and seemed to have forgotten (I'm referring to the lack of father.son sentiment in Crystal Skull.)

159- This happens to me all the time...but on a subconscious level. For example, during Juno, every other song I kept thinking about House and Wilson (especially Anyone Else but You). I love H/W fanvids as well!

Re: 159

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
!! You did that all through Juno, too? :D I thought I was the only one, but Anyone Else But You fit disturbingly well, didn't it? XD

ETA:
Okay, I'm not the op of 108, but after reading your response to it I just had to add: IAWTC. I was so pissed that they killed Henry Jones Sr., and then hardly mentioned it at all. D:

135. I didn't like Fred either. Not until she died and became Illyria. I really really wish they had casted Alexis Denisof as somebody. He has amazing buttloads of chemistry with everything. Especially Eliza Dushku.

156. WORD. That show has me laughing NONSTOP through the whole episode. I don't know why more people don't watch it! It's freaking hilarious. And also it has three cute guys! +Danny Devito!

107: Can't really say I agree with the secret itself, since I've "discovered" a lot of great actors through super popular movies and then gone back and looked at their previous work. I don't see anything wrong with it. However, this has reminded me that I medically need a copy of "Wonder Boys" and "Chaplin" (already got "Home for the Holidays").

137: Are you me? Seriously, this basically saved me the trouble of making almost that exact secret. And yeah, I am aware of hypocritical it is and I'm not sure how comfortable I am admitting this publicly, but... yeah. I have enjoyed some series where I didn't like the artwork, just because the characters were great, but by and large, if it's got big shiney eyes and pretty boys, I'm not terribly interested. I tend to like the writing in less "traditional" more, too; they tend to have less conventional ideas, which is more enjoyable for me.

Re: 107, 137

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
you're really only a hypocrite if you look down on people for liking a series based on the art, if YOU like a series...based on the art.

or if you look down on people who like a series (which many times is because they like the story) because you DON'T like the art and only that reason.

113. DITTO. And, you know, people ask me why I am so excited about the movie and I...don't know.

137. I'll give you the other ones, but in what parallel universe is YUKI KAORI'S ART "PIG DISGUSTING"?

141

[identity profile] gothoutraverin.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Word. Hell, I want people to just write fanfic about the xmen characters in general. The comic books don't get enough love =(

114 - What the fuck is wrong with you? Anything can be a game, even fitness. (And if anything should be fun, its fitness.) God forbid we teach that to people who don't consider themselves "gamers". You don't need to be a gamer to play games.

120 - Wow... They'd get along so well...

121 - Bad RPs are like bad relationships. If you're not having fun then you're not having fun. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you. Just break it off and find something else to try. It's stressful but you'll feel better for it in the end.

135 - I LOL'ed at this. I like him in the part, and I think he's handsome in his way, but it's still damn funny. :) Yeah, he's got a bit of a "Templeton" vibe about him.

144 - OMG it was totally obvious by that point that he was! Even if you hadn't seen the first movie it's not like that flick had been exactly subtle up to that point!!!

105. You win at secrets. If I knew you and we were friends, I would come over and read them out loud dramatically WITH you. <3

122. As one of the triforce of adult fans of this show that make up my household, I can confidently say seconded, thirded, and fourthed.

123. Ooh, a plane! <3

104 - Haha, ah, thank you. I'm always happy to hear people like my fic, although I wish you'd chosen some more recent/colored fanart I've done cause that all looks really old to me. :B Although I haven't done much lately as I used to, haha so there is that.

I have a fairly clear idea of how it will end, and I do intend to end it someday and have been working on it fairly recently, so. :B I don't think I'm good enough to be published or anything, but thank you anyway. |D

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
O-oh, wow. XD Ahaha, yeah, HI I REALLY LIKE YOUR FIC. I was planning on doing that, but I felt bad resizing the elaborate, colored stuff you've done, so I just looked for sketches that fit best with what I was trying to say. (That shot of Scri was just too perfect to resist, though, colored or not. |D)

That's really great to hear, I'm excited to read more of it! I look forward to seeing what will happen. And hey, do what you enjoy doing, but just keep in mind that if you ever do want to get published some anonymice out here think you could do it and wish you luck. ;D

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS!!! the movie that made me love robert downey jr :D

having said that, does it really matter how/when people discover him? i mean, as long as people recognize his talent and appreciate him... isn't that what really matters?

OP 107

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
:D

Aha, I'm just angry that people are saying they were fans before "Iron Man" - when none of his previous movies had big fandoms, and he was pretty much shunned because of his drug promblems.

126

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
The point is, if you yourself don't think it is good, why are you asking people to read it? Don't you take pride in your work? If it's not perfect, don't publish... if you think you can do better, DO BETTER!

Re: 126

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I say post it if they want, but don't do the idiotic thing of announcing that it sucks. it looks like the attention-whoring that it is.

just post the damn thing.

[identity profile] grapesheezy.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
101 - I just don't like it because the lyrics always mess up the flow of the story and I either skip over them or stop reading

137 - D: But a lot of the ones you don't like are good!(except that creepy one where the mouths are where their noses should be. That freaks me out so hardcore)

134/144

[identity profile] agentphillips87.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
I went into the movie knowing they were father and son (due to a post from here actually - though to be honest until that point I hadn't realised the rumours were just rumours and not something that had been confirmed) but I still totally see where you're coming from. I can't bring myself to get into father/son incest, but to make up for that I kinda want Harrison/Shia RPS now (which may in fact be worse...)

151

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't mind the Beatles homage and have no problem with them finishing up the album at Abbey Road (why not, that's what it's there for, right?) and plenty of people take their picture at the crossing.

However, the T-shirts are a bit far. Sort of curious to see them, can anyone link? Cursory glance at FBR store bears no fruit.

Re: 151

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
http://store.panicatthedisco.com/albumview.asp?idproduct=51873

It's this one. It's from the part in Yellow Submarine right after they sing Sgt Pepper's and this head here rises from the ground and the Beatles are dancing around and sing "Billy....Shears!" (I think John is on top of it) and then it goes in to "with a little help from my friends." Although I believe the eyes were edited out for no good reason on this shirt.

The only reference that this even has to do with the Beatles is their incorrectly spelled title of the shirt Billy Sheers, but PATD fans who haven't seen Yellow Submarine wouldn't know that. They could at least give some credit where that picture came from in the product description.

137. Yuki Kaori's art pig disgusting? Look how stupid you are. I hope you've at least bothered to get some information about her stories, because they are in no way inferior to Akagi or Neuro.

And if you admitted you're a hypocrite, why did you make the secret in the first place? You're the one who should give the bottom works a try EVEN THOUGH their art is "pig disgusting". (lol 4chan)

OP COULDN'T RESIST; FIGHT ON, ANONYMOUS

(Anonymous) 2008-06-01 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
>some information about her stories
Unconvincing incest, gay subtext/actual text that tries too hard, overblown and shallow ANGST AND DRAMA BAWWWWW, "cool" and "edgy" references to Christianity--am I right? I've tried some of her works (Angel Sanctuary, Godchild, etc.), but not only do I think her art is unappealing (everyone has droopy eyes, bad inking, etc.), but I also can't get a good sense of what the fuck is going on. Her pacing and use of panels are bad.

>no way inferior to Akagi
I-I'm sorry, but I couldn't take you seriously after this point. I admit that you have some good rebuttals to matters that I didn't address in the original secret, but...I'm sorry. Please excuse me.

>why did you make the secret in the first place?
Because this community is for the purpose of expressing one's innermost thoughts concerning fandom-related issues, no matter how sick or hypocritical they are?

>You're the one who should give the bottom works a try EVEN THOUGH their art is "pig disgusting". (lol 4chan)
The only ones I haven't actually tried at all are Lucky Star (but that's excusable, right?), the Key works (well...one episode of Clannad shouldn't count), and Gundam Seed (no room on my computer, sorry). I've read several volumes of the others (or more than one short work, where applicable), and I'm actually keeping up with Code Geass despite the urge to scratch my eyes out each episode. (I've read the last chapter of PoT, too. Art was still terrible, lol)

And lol 4chan indeed.
