His wife isn't from the present-day future though? In her modern world there are germs but homosexual acts are still against the law.

His wife is from post WWII, though I'm not sure why that makes a difference? The secret isn't talking about the legality of homosexuality.

It's not, but OP was saying he was open-minded about time travel and germ theory. Those are both things his wife believes, has firsthand experience with, and discusses with him. His belief in them didn't just manifest out of nowhere. Would she be likely to have positive opinions of gay people to share with him too? Even if she did, would it be a subject she'd be likely to speak about? Who else would he be getting the message that gay is okay from if not her?

But why assume that via his wife is the only possible way he could get the message that gay people aren't evil? This also assumes that everyone is naturally a homophobe in the 1700s and it's not possible to think differently.

He's the leading male character in a romantic drama, so I don't know what he does or who else he interacts with when he's not looking muscular in a kilt or angsting over Claire but that's all I've seen really.

https://queerscotland.com has some interesting writing on historical attitudes towards homosexuality in Scotland but overall they don't seem positive. Is it possible to think differently? Sure. Is it likely if you've only ever heard people give negative opinions? Idk.

DA Well, Grey and Claire do get to interact a whole lot in the later books (to the point of actually sleeping with each other) so Claire probably hasn't demonised Grey in the same way Jamie has just because Grey's a homosexual. So maybe she can help him out with that.
