Do you use subtitles when you watch movie/tv shows in your own language?

Yeah, I miss stuff a lot so it's easier. Like my hearing's normal but I sometimes don't process words.

Hell yes. Usually because I have to have the volume down low to not disturb anyone if it's late at night, but also because a lot of the time people talk too fast in movies and tv and I miss out on bits of the dialogue.

No, it's a distraction. In other languages I can hear the tone of the words and read at the same time, but reading the subtitles and then hearing them say it creates a weird echo thing for me.

Yes, for various reasons. Sometimes speakers aren't the greatest, sometimes the movie/tv show itself has awful sound balance, etc

Yeah, my hearing has always been dodgy. I can only pick out individual noises if it is quiet, otherwise it is just a wall of white noise, so I always have the tv on low volume but that means I miss a lot of dialogue. When I'm with others I need the captions because they listen to it at normal volumes which means it is just white noise to me, so I need the captions to know what is going on.

Of course everyone bitches and demands I turn them off because a mild inconvenience to them is not a price they are prepared to pay to let me participate in movie night.

Hell no!

I will use English subtitles when I watch movies in any non-Scandinavian language. The exception is media in English, there I'll skip subs.

All the time. I switched to watching subtitles when I first got a DVD player because there was something wrong where all the action was way too loud and the speaking was too soft, and if you had one at a level you liked, the other would either blow out your ears or you couldn't understand what was being said.

Oh, yes. Sometimes the audio is crap, or I have the volume turned down because it's late at night and I don't want to bother the neighbors in the apartment next door.

Yes, when I'm watching TV later at night so I don't risk potentially waking anybody.

Always. My hearing just isn't what it used to be. I usually do all right at the movies though, but maybe it's partly because they're so much louder.

Not as a rule, because i find i sit and read the subtitles instead of watching anything, even when i understand everything that's being said, so i miss stuff.

I *did* use subtitles for 'The Expanse', because they had a lot of slang and some other languages sort of tossed in, and people with low/growly/different voices that made it hard to really hear, sometimes.

I have a copy of a favorite movie i never watch because the damn subtitles are huge, *yellow*, completely unnecessary (they're speaking with Scottish fucking accents, not speaking in Russian!), and wrong. So annoying!

Sometimes. Usually not for the whole thing, but depending on accents and enunciation, I'll turn them on for certain scenes. (Sense8 and Doctor Who, I turn on the subs/CC a lot.)

My partner is hard of hearing, so yes.

Yes because outside noise can drown out the sound.

Always, and I get super annoyed if they're not available.

Dear DVD/bluray companies: Closed captioning is not the same as SDH. CC does not translate over the cords for my older bluray system. Start captioning everything, please. Sincerely, your deaf and/or hard-of-hearing customers.

...that should have been "start subtitling everything, please."

The latest version of "My Fair Lady" that I've seen in the store has Brazilian Portuguese subtitles. And that's all. I'm still shaking my head in wonderment over that one.

It really bugs me when an older version has closed captioning and the newer version doesn't. Funimation did this with YuYu Hakusho and it really sucks because the English script is pretty different from the Japanese one, so just turning on the Japanese subtitles doesn't work.

Yup. The TV we had when I was a kid had really bad speakers, so I would turn on the captions so I wouldn't miss anything. I have a nice TV now, but I still turn on the captions. They're especially useful when I'm watching shows like Doctor Who.

I do at the gym when I don't want to bother with headphones, and I do occasionally if I'm watching something where the dialog is often quiet but there are a lot of sudden, loud noises - musical score, explosions, whatever - and it's late and I don't want to annoy my neighbors with these blasts of noise because I turned up the tv to hear the dialog.
