I guess I mean. A lot of people will look at characters who show trademark symptoms if they're not extreme enough and be like "omg you guys they're just quirky". They only get recognized if they're severe or someone in story suggests it or talks about it.

Well, it's not a question of "recognition", it's a question of interpretation, surely. There isn't one correct answer, unless a character is specifically represented to be something in the text itself. Most of this is grey areas and interpretation and how you choose to look at it.

I completely get why The Discourse around those headcanons would be frustrating as shit, though

I mean I'm of the opinion that forcing headacanons is stupid and you shouldn't expect people to share your headcanon. I just wish people didn't get so annoyed at people for having them.

Or one could say, with much more evidence, that 'Autistic'(mostly self-diagnosed) people apparently don't want anyone interpreted as on the spectrum unless they are super cool, super smart, solve all the problems that the NT untermenschen are struggling with and everyone lusts after them...

I was talking about unrealistic expectations of media representation, not people in RL.

Being seen as 'a person' is one thing. But the number of hotly-claimed fictional reps who are all the things I named - or else historical famous people - is a bit embarrassing. As if being 'just folks' isn't enough.

I'll give you Isaac Newton, though.

Oh yeah that's just the media doing its thing.

I honestly don't care about which historical figures might be thought to have any form of autism and I even sort of roll my eyes when people tell me "oh so-and so brilliant philosopher might have had that, you know".

I mean maybe that would have made me feel good in middle school but usually when I headcanon a character like Luna Lovegood as autistic its because they share struggles and things to overcome. When they're the kid getting hard candy and paper balls thrown at them. So i get kind of annoyed when people act like headcanoning characters is shallow or all about their fame or whatever.

Or maybe me, an actual autistic person, is just tired of "autism headcanons" being all about the cutesy, quirky characteristics and none of the things that are frustrating to deal with. These (almost 90% neurotypical) people latch onto any quirky character because autism is the current mental illness trend, like bipolar and depression and PTSD were before.

No one's allowed to just be different, they have to be on the spectrum because no one's different like that just because they are.

I had the cutesy ones. I just like seeing the ones that actually portray the struggle and when I find a good one its worth scrolling past all the bad ones.

I don't like the bad ones but I live to see the good ones. And for all the people "attaching labels" I also see just as many people reacting with hostility at seeing someone interpret their faves as being "retarded".

I'm the same person who's argued with someone on tumblr about considering the actual symptoms before diagnosing not because I wanted people to stop but I wanted people to be informed about it.

Then I'm gonna be blunt but Luna really doesn't come across as autistic when you actually consider her background, just quirky and she's made fun of for looking at the world in a different way because her dad raised her like that.

So don't make this into stereotypes bullshit when it's not with this specific character.

I was going by stuff that's actually on the diagnostic criteria like being blunt and honest to a degree that's insensitive and not being in tune socially about the right thing to say. But hey if you wanna dismiss actual symptoms as stereotypes..

I will say that this is definitely up to interpretation. You're interpretation is as valid as mine. But I think its unfair to dismiss people's reasoning for this headcanon, as well as the fact that lots of people feel like there isn't much concrete positive portrayal to be had so they make their own. Not everyone who makes this headcanon is going off stereotypes.

Of course this doesn't mean you have to like it. but misrepresenting your opposition isn't really fair.
