My pet hypothesis is that all the apparent impending doom is Kojima doing his "never trust a trailer" thing, the big twist in the game itself will be "Everyone Lives!," and the end is going to make everybody cry with the sheer power of its bittersweet awesomeness.
If Otacon does die, they had better send him out in style! Anything less than a Crowning Moment of Heartrending is going to be an extra level of unacceptable.

I could very well have posted that exact secret. I'm the same way; if Otacon dies I'll cry like a big fangirl baby, but at the same time I'd kind of want to see how Snake would react to losing his anchor. Plus, if Snake does end up dying in the end (which I'm starting to doubt just because of how much hype there is about it), I'd kind of want for Otacon to die first rather than for him to be left behind by himself. The poor guy has already survived through enough loss. Not that Snake hasn't, but for some reason I have more of a mothering tendency toward Otacon, heh.

But still, until the moment of truth, I'm clinging to the naive hope that everybody will somehow be ok in the end, haha.
