Annoying feedback on fic

(Anonymous) 2017-07-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone got any recently?

Re: Annoying feedback on fic

What I got was a comment on a promptfic. I was taking prompts and writing things for people. Let's just say the prompt was like, "John rides on a skateboard!" I got a comment from someone (not the prompter) that was like, "This was cute, but John would never ride on a skateboard, because of reasons X, Y, and Z. Also, skateboards are really dangerous and people should do their research before deciding to ride one."

Uh, okay. I agree that John would never ride on a skateboard in canon, but THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS WAS ABOUT. This was about me taking prompts for whatever people wanted me to write. Was it a realistic prompt? No. Was it a fun prompt? Yes.

It just annoyed me.

sa

Also, the prompt was listed right at the top of the fic, so it was totally obvious that it was a promptfic.

Out of curiosity, was the actual mode of transportation a motorcycle or is the whole example prompt made up?

I only ask because motorcycle was the first thing to come to mind for me of something someone could ride that someone else would find too dangerous.

Either way, that blows, and that reviewer is a dick.

IA this is dumb. I feel like a lot of readers don't really get that characters aren't supposed to be the poster child for correct behavior, unless of course, that's their personality. In real life, people do all sorts of things that might not be the best idea, or the safest idea. Most characters will be the same way, if they're realistic. Acting like it should be otherwise smacks of the weird moral policing fandom seems really into these days.

I will always give the gold star of 'Incredibly Stupid Comments on a Fanfic' to the [almost exactly] 500 word comment which was pretty much a detailed outline of what sounded like a very mediocre fanfic, bracketed by "Wow, you're so talented, I wish I could write my dream fanfic... Maybe someone will write it for me! (ʘ‿ʘ✿)"
Like. Really? Holy shit. I could hardly believe my eyes.

Ugh, I HATE comments that are poorly disguised prompts.

Once, I got a comment like that with a truly wacky prompt about the (male) main character obtaining a harem of female characters, and I just sat there thinking, "So you think that I would be the best pick to write this dream fic of yours. Me, the exclusive purveyor of slash and femslash?"

Ha, I've had that.

I wrote a novel length canon compliant piece. This one commenter kept pitching their own AU, and referring me to discussions on reddit or some forum about this idea ( which I had zero interest in.)

The one that stands out to me is the one where someone said my fic was good but that it didn't feel believable to just have the gay couple get together like a het couple would. It was a fic for LOTR. You cannot believe how much I do not care about this. Maybe some of us don't want homophobia in our escapism fics.

Not mine, but I was reading a fic earlier today that was a harmless soulmate AU oneshot and the latest comment on it was an anon who input their name as You need and their entire comment was just "You need Jesus." It was totally uncalled for, unnecessary, and rude. I feel bad for the author.

lmao

Maybe I'm just used to people dropping that line irl, but I'm pretty sure that the anon was trolling. I hope the author didn't take it to heart; I'd probably lol.

I ranted about it a few days ago, but I got "Love the fic, hate the pairing" on a romance fic and couldn't figure out why anyone would do that. Just... why? Why read a pairing you hate and then announce it?

Also kind of annoying, one where I stranded two characters away from the others and made it very through that no, they couldn't get back on their own with the resources they had and would need to be rescued, one of the first comments was "If they'd brought along one of the girls she'd have fixed everything and saved them by now!" .... um. Ok? Just... pull a war rig out of her vagina and drive them off in it I guess?

Oh man, let me tell you about a multi-chapter fic I was writing that was clearly marked pairing X/Y. I kept getting comments from this person who kept wondering when Y/Z was going to happen. It wasn't!

It was a love triangle fandom, but the fic was marked for pairing one, nothing suggestive of pairing two in the notes, tags, summary or the actual PLOT of the fic, but they persisted in commenting for several updates, oblivious to what was actually happening in the story.

I'll read ship fic for fandoms I'm not in, but I definitely don't understand reading pairings I legitimately dislike. Unless it was my NOTP and it was a super angsty character death thing, maybe. I've never done that, but that's about the only situation I think would make sense for this.

As for your second point, this is slightly OT, but I feel you. I love genderbending fanfic and yet as a genre, this is one of the biggest problems I find within. I once read a female!Merlin fic that was meant to encompass the series, writing it with a female Merlin, but from the first chapter Merlin was this self-assured, assertive woman, who was super confident in her magic and I could not backbutton faster. That's not Merlin. That's "girl power" fantasy Merlin and is nothing like the character in canon.

Similarly, one of my favorite people retweeted one of my least favorite people saying, most likely as an aside response to the Doctor casting hubbub, that if Harry Potter were a girl, there'd be no story because Harry would just go get McGonagall to act on her behalf. I hate that sentiment so much. It's false and wrong and bad. It's not empowering to women, and would, in fact, rob the world of one of the best selling series of all time, written by a woman? But then again, I already dislike the person who wrote this tweet, so I'm biased against them, even if in this case they're demonstrably wrong.

Dude, I used to get this ALL the time! I wrote RarePair in a fandom of OTP! and there were always people that would comment, "I really liked this, too bad it was RarePair instead of OTP!"

I actually got so annoyed once that I put a disclaimer on one fic that was along the lines of, "There is no OTP here. There will be no OTP here. Do not look for OTP here."

YES! I got this in my askbox today actually:

"you wrote ABC fan fiction oh my god you fucking nerd (should I read it though? love your mad men fic...but am I going to sink that low?)"

I'm not sure if they're trying to compliment me or insult me.

Yep. Finally finished an epic after three long years of working on it (we're talking several hundred thousand words here). Sat back, waited for comments...

"I expect [a long-winded continuation]."

Haven't responded because my response would look quite similar to "FUCK YOU!".

I don't get many comments on my fics these days, even the ones that have a decent number of kudos. I'll always remember the comment I got on a fic I wrote in the early days of the NCIS fandom, though. The fic was admittedly a piece of crap in terms of writing, but it was Kate/Abby and was about them taking care of each other while they were on their periods. Some rando commented that they thought it was sorta sweet even though the thought of Kate/Abby made them sick, and why couldn't I have substituted Tony or even Gibbs for one of the girls?

Yeah, I didn't feel the need to dignify that with a response.

Re: Annoying feedback on fic

not recently but I remember I occasionally got "feedback" that felt like asking me to change the story to their tastes when it wasn't that kind of story and there was nothing really wrong with the story I was writing except it wasn't what they wanted.

I never responded because I had too many past encounters with reviwers who thought their feedback was gold and got offended if you said anything but what they wanted to hear. but it would often kill my muse.

I haven't gotten feedback in a while but I kept getting "please continue!!!" comments on clearly complete one shots (that were marked as such).

I post a chapter for a story I've been working on for months, which has a plot reveal that has enormous ramifications for the future and for re-evaluating earlier events. I'm a bit jittery.

The first (and so far only) comment is a query about a nearly irrelevant side issue.

Yes, I'm annoyed.

(It'll be fine; I'm just a bit jittery and lacking in balanced perspective right now, as I always am after posting. It'll be fine.)
