YES 100% agreed!

Apologists will say that love is a complex and complicated emotion that perhaps is not ideally suddenly addressed for the first time out of nowhere right before the moment of someone's pending death but that's no excuse. A Real Man would have had a concise and appropriate "I love you too" ready to whip out at a moment's notice regardless of how he felt or how many years he'd spent in smuggler society or how predictable and trite it made the script.

I don't think it's the case that anytime someone says "I love you", you should immediately reply "I love you too" regardless of circumstances. I do think there can be emotional complexities and feelings and shit involved.

He's not ready to admit it yet. If you go by the old EU, there are reasons for that. Not sure if they've given us reasons yet in the new canon. But clearly there must be something in his background. He's clearly older, more jaded than Leia. So it always made sense to me that he loved her, but couldn't say it.

ideal and appropriate =/= in character, Solo is not supposed to be either of those things
