YES 100% agreed!

Apologists will say that love is a complex and complicated emotion that perhaps is not ideally suddenly addressed for the first time out of nowhere right before the moment of someone's pending death but that's no excuse. A Real Man would have had a concise and appropriate "I love you too" ready to whip out at a moment's notice regardless of how he felt or how many years he'd spent in smuggler society or how predictable and trite it made the script.

That dickless wonder. I bet he herds nerfs too.

Eh. It worked in the film, and from a character point of view, what Han says in that particular moment doesn't have to be definitive of all his feelings or actions or attitudes.

I just considered that his way of saying "I love you" back. At least until ROTJ.

I don't know why people need him to say "I love you" so badly. IMO, it's such an overrated, overused phrase. I think it's nice to mix things up a little.

I agree so much. I mean... yeah it's not OOC for him to say that or anything but people acting like it's a grand romantic moment and it just sorta falls flat for me.

I think the moment feels true because they're BOTH proud and emotionally furtive people and if one of them is utterly disarmed by the situation the other almost has to play it down as a comfort. For all of Han's pretense of cockiness, he doesn't completely know where he stands with Leia - hell, he still buys she might be in love with Luke in ROTJ - and while all this affection and trust has grown between them they're on shaky enough ground that when she confesses her love in that moment, to say "I know," almost absolves her of having to go on wishing they'd been more honest with each other. Ford has said something to the effect that it's actually supposed to be the selfless comforting response, and that's the best way I can interpret it.

I think he thought saying it back would make it feel like that was it, the end. Keeping up his cockiness was his way of trying to be brave and keep Leia from feeling even worse.

Honestly, I never was into their "epic romance." I know that for a lot of people it's one of the reasons why they like Star Wars, but I liked them a lot better in the group dynamic than how they treated each other as a couple. The best comparison I can make for them is a Rumiko Takahashi couple, where it's a sort-of-jerkish but really-he-has-a-heart-of-gold-guys dude and a normally reasonable girl who lets the asshole get under her skin and they end up fighting all the time because ~~~~Sexual Tension~~~~.

I feel kind of bad for it, but I'm glad their relationship didn't go all butterflies and rainbows after the original trilogy. IMO, it could never have worked without being bumpy. Honestly? I prefer it that way, not every couple works out.

In the interest of fairness, I definitely could see that the characters cared for each other, it's just that I don't think they were cut out to be in that kind of relationship long term.

I want to chime in and say Luke was always my favorite, and I didn't quite get why that line was romantic. Don't get me wrong, I liked Han, but he wasn't my ideal. On the other hand, there's just something about blonde and innocent farmboys...

I suppose at least one thing it has going for it, it's not boring! Everyone brings their own interpretation to why he said that instead of "I love you too" and it's still debated, even all these years later.
