I know! That's kind of why it's frustrating and weird to talk about, I guess. Because it edges up against a lot of things that bother me, but isn't necessarily a thing that bothers me. I think "it's just their way" is a really easy way to let someone off the hook for not actually expressing their emotions, I guess. It's a really hard line to draw between those things.

And, again, I don't know why it's such a big deal to me. I think this might be one of those cases where it's some kind of an issue for me that I hadn't really thought about before or something

I think you just have to take it case by case. What works for one couple doesn't necessarily work for another. What you perceive to be an unhealthy thing might actually be normal and healthy for them. Some women love getting flowers, others would rather feed them to the cat.
