I've seen most of the movies, including the last one. Not particularly into the series, so I'm not that invested in the characters. But it's weird to me that so few fans of the series get that Snape is supposed to be morally gray. Yeah he does some shitty creepy things and acts like a bully, but he does some really noble, difficult things too. He's not utterly irredeemable scum, nor is he a nice kind person. He's complex, and it's okay to like him or dislike him, but the extremes on either side seem to be missing the point. I guess it's just like people to drift to extremes though. If you disagree or dislike someone, it means they are garbage or scum and you're wrong to think anything good about them. If you like someone, they are a poor woobie who got a bad hand in life and shouldn't be judged for their behavior. Why cant it be something in between? Sorry if this is rambly, my brain is a mess right now.

I wonder if at least part of it can be traced back to fan factions when the books were coming out. Because the very first book came out and it was "Look at Snape, this obvious Bad Guy, he's probably totally the villain! .... whoops what a twist it was this other guy instead and Snape was trying to help the Good Guys and it only looked bad."

And after that the tradition continued in the fandom of
*Snape does something bad*
Snape Fans: There's probably some explanation that will mean it only looks bad! He's a hero at heart.
Snape Haters: Finally! Proof he's a villain! As I've been saying since Book One and we were thrown the red herring that he wasn't the villain.... THAT ONE TIME. But he's totally a real villain.

Every book the same argument. He killed Dumbledore? HERO! PART OF DUMBLEDORE'S PLANS!! vs. VILLAIN! FINALLY SHOWING HIS TRUE COLORS!

So when it ended without either a heartfelt tearful confession that he hated playing the part of the bad guy but saw no other option to maintain his cover, nor a evil MWAHAHAHA finally I can stop pretending to be such a goody-two-shoes and reveal my TRUE VILLAINOUS NATURE! It devolved into squabbling over if the grey was closer to black or if the grey was closer to white.
