Dealing with a gnat/fruit fly infestation with a pet

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
So my place is usually pretty bug free but for some reason this summer all different kinds of flies are getting in and I don't know WTF is going on.

I've already been googling solutions but I am curious if f!s has had to deal with this and has any advice.

I don't leave food out and don't have any plants, the main issue is my cat because it's hard to keep up with her eating habits so she'll always leave some crumbs/some amount of food out (and I've spotted some bugs around her bowls today.)

So I want suggestions that'll obviously be safe for her since the places I have seen the bugs most are near the window (where she sleeps and probably where they got in here in the first place) and her food bowl.

I am not sure if they are gnats or fruit flies, I had about 3 regular flies this summer but most of what is here every day is the small ones.

No prob, anon, get one of those little fruit fly catcher box things. I think they are little houses the flies fly into and never leave again. They're drawn to it and it poisons them? Throw it out after a few weeks and get a new one. They only cost a couple dollars. I only recently discovered them and they are a lifesaver.

You could also try a cup of honey or something that they get stuck into, but personally I get really grossed out by seeing dead bugs so the little box thing is so nice.

Any brand recommendations for the fruit fly catcher thing? I've been looking up different products but I always get thrown off by negative reviews so I never know what to buy.

Right now I am trying the cup trick mainly because I have nothing else at the moment, but it's a temporary solution because I'll get grossed out as well lol Thanks!

They say the easiest and cheapest way to catch fruit flies is to get a ceramic or glass bowl (or short glass jar), and pour a little apple cider vinegar into it (and maybe a banana peel or piece of rotting fruit, if you don't want to murder the little things too badly). Cover the top with plastic wrap, and secure with a rubber band. Take a toothpick and poke several holes into it, not too big and not too small. Leave it alone and check on it the next day. If you've got bugs in there, you can take the bowl outside, far away from your house, and free the bugs. You may need to reuse the trap (or make a new one) for any additional fruit flies.

Yeah I was thinking of buying some apple cider vinegar tomorrow but I didn't know if I should buy that or just a trap since I essentially never use apple cider vinegar. Thank you!

First, check to make absolutely 100% sure you don't have something like an apple or some potatoes or other produce that managed to get hidden and go off.

Clean your drains and/or cover them when you're not using them, in case they're getting water or living in your pipes.

Making a homemade trap with some apple cider vinegar in a container with holes in the lid (or in a cling wrap lid) also works well. Also I've found wine works better than vinegar, but needs to be changed more frequently.

Yeah I already cleaned my drains a bit tonight but I think I'm going to do a completely thorough clean of ever corner this weekend in case there is something I'm not seeing.

The infestation isn't THAT bad I just really hate bugs :/

Thanks!

I mostly say about the produce because our last sudden bunch of fruitflies came from a potato that escaped and rolled off the counter and fell down the crack between it and the fridge where it was extremely well hidden.

I had never been so happy to find a disgusting rotten potato.

In my experience the best fruit fly trap is: in a bowl put three parts of some cheap juice (apple works well), two parts cheap vinegar, a tinh splash of dish soap. The soap destroys the liquid's surface tension so the flies, which would otherwise simply be able to stand on the surface, sink right through and drown. It's very effective.
It's not pretty, but you can change it regularly.
