This seems like kind of a weird argument

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because it is.

Ship what you want, OP, and let others do the same.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Not anon you replied to but I'm confused how you guys are reading the secret? Isn't that basically what OP is implying? She's saying that she laughs when people freak out about incest ships, because she's been shipping incest for decades in Greek mythology.

God, it's like you expect people to do more than skim for things to be judgy about. There's no fun if you actually pay attention to context...or the...actual words being said.

Rule No. 1 in reading fandom secrets: Only look for words you can string together into a sentence that lets to talk down to someone.

I used to dig all over the internet for Greek mythology fics. Kept trying to find the original yaoi pairing, Ganymede/Zeus. There were only like three fics. was disappointed.

I don't care for incestuous ships myself, but far be it from me to stop anyone else shipping them if they so wish.

There is a difference between people who say no one should ship incest and people who just don't personally want to ship incest. That's just personal taste. Yay that you ship incest in Greek Mythology. I personally mostly don't like incest ships. I'm not telling anyone else not to ship, I just don't like myself.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe OP is talking about the people who, quote, "get up in arms" not the ones that kink and let kink.

They did literally write down which group they meant.

I don't really see that many people like that. And I read it as they were feeling superior for shipping incest. I'm tired, though, and am probably reading in to things.

In gods we trust!

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You do you, OP. I'm not a fan of incest pairings, but I am a fan of mythology, especially Greek and Egyptian.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Hades and Persephone so much, but unlike you I didn't know when I initially read their story that they were related. I had this really dumbed down book on Greek myths as a child that took out all the naughty bits.

Oh my. First notice that Hades and Persephone were related. I suppose I am suddenly an incest shipper myself. Who would have thought?!

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think incest was a lot less taboo before we understood genetics, because the Greek Gods were all over that. Not to mention the bestiality. :D :D :D

And go you, OP. I was brought up on Bullfinch's Mythology rather than Mother Goose, and found it vastly entertaining, but I can't say I ever shipped anyone. I thought the Gods and Goddesses were off their freakin' rockers. SO MEAN with the smiting poor mortals all the time for the tiniest offense!

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
my favorite cartoon about this is Hera screaming at Zeus, "It's fuck, marry, OR kill, you twit, not AND!"

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
In all fairness, I don't think mythology incest is like... real incest. Because typically, these gods literally represent elements/concepts, and the stories themselves are somewhat allegorical, so to speak, rather than literal beliefs. At least among the classical pagan philosophers.

not that fandom versions can't be more literal lol

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Incest was rife enough at the time that it's simply being reflected in the mythology. Nothing allegorical about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
The myths absolutely are allegorical.

Incest may have been more common (at least, things like cousins and such) but that doesn't change the nature of the myths.

Plus, even if you want to take the gods literally (which classical writings suggest that philosophers largely did not) you can't really fault a god for incest when you and your siblings are like the only people in the world.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
The Bible is fairly incestuous, too.

People have always enjoyed incest in their myths and stories.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't think I'd ever see a secret for my religion. Even right down to the specific deities. Rock on, OP, rock on.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Between the two incest secrets in the last post, and this post sandwiched between two incest ships, incest is this year's panfandom flavor? I wouldn't blame Greek mythology though, it's SPN that brought us juggernaut incest shipping. Not to mention original male dog.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
How do I undread that last sentence.

I think Greek mythology may be a bit different.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm fine with incest ships (you want zero moral high ground, there is a fair amount of RPF incest, especially in Bandom). But I feel like Greek mythology can be looked at quite a bit differently than media where the relationships between characters are supposed to be analogous to reality, even if nothing else in canon is.

op give me recs please
