Hahaha, very funny!

No, I mean: "ritualistically performative," "denunciations," and "self-satisfied prudery."

I know what those words mean individually, but I don't understand them in this context whatsoever.

Oh yeah, me either.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2017-07-29 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and it's kind of hard to discuss a secret when I don't know what it's saying. :/

What I think "ritualistic denunciation" means is that someone feel they have to criticize incest shipping regularly regardless of the actual amount of incest shipping on tumblr, and regardless of whether it's really bothering them or not.

Also they feel they have to state it as if it's an obvious point that "everybody" agrees on that does not even need to be discussed.

Forget it, the anon put it much better.

OP

Essentially my point. Tumblr culture seems to demand of its users a kind of "Reblog if .... and you're a terrible person if you don't" orthodoxy, and this extends in particular to the point I raised in my secret.

I think that last bit translates to virtue signalling, because why else wouldn't they be on board with two hot brothers banging like screen doors, but the rest sounds like word salad cribbed from a sociology text book.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2017-07-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
What the fuck does "virtue signalling" mean? Why can't anyone in fandom just speak plainly?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
To virtue signal saying you are for or again something, not because your moral compass points in that direction, but because you risk social chastisement if you don't.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Against. Not again.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
NA

It's not - speaking in the interests of people learning to be kinder - a term I find thoroughly useful. Because I don't think the people who are the worst, the ones that sound like they wandered out of 1984, quite see it that way.

Because, well, I've been that angry before? (Christ, I was a stressed out teen and young adult.) And when I was like that, that judgemental, spiralling into the anger like a bad case of depression and as short-sighted - I didn't think of it as using in-group terms or language policing. I was just that angry, that every little detail was something I zeroed in on and got angrier by, every action people took I just naturally assumed was done in the worst possible faith. And someone telling me I was doing this to fit in with a peer group would just have made me angrier, because I would not have considered it true - it would just have felt like another attack. And it wouldn't have encouraged me to stop.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I mean, the whole argument of virtue signalling operates on the logic that people are insincere and don't actually believe what they mean

this is demonstrably not the case

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Virtue signalling is a right-wing-Internet meme, not a fandom meme

It's essentially used to explain any time anyone evinces concern for someone who doesn't belong to their socioeconomic and racial subgroup

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's used all over the net. Don't clutch yer pearls.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It is strongly associated with the online right. That's just a fact.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Just your opinion.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
DA - Generally means stuff you don't actually care that much about, but think talking about makes you look like a better person. Like someone who doesn't like animals posting Adopt Don't Shop memes to look like they care while never lifting a finger to help actual animals.

In this case, they're saying most of the Purity Brigade doesn't actually care about real life victims of incest, they just want to sound all moral by loudly denouncing ships they find icky.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's an Online White Nationalist sneer at people who show openly that values like tolerance and acceptance of other people's different preferences have meaning, to them and/or to society.

Because I'm not a right-wing internet troll (and not so dumb as to blindly use their monikers), I'm with you on going WTF about the term as such.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Goodness, what an angry person you are! Also you have an astonishing ability to reach ridiculous conclusions.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not wrong.

Signalling that you're virtuous...

"people who, for example, expunge certain terms from their vocabulary not because they actively give a shit about not being ableist, but rather because they think it’s important not to appear ableist – appearances and the in-group status they bring are what matter, not the core principle of ‘we do this in order to be kinder to others’." (because it was on my tumblr dash earlier today)

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Which is also why people who don't think they're racist get so upset when someone points out that they did something racist, because actually fighting racism is less important than virtue signalling (in this case that you're not racist). So you get people loudly criticising media for not having Strong Black Characters (and attacking people who ship the wrong thing) and then whining about BLM having demonstrations.

They enjoy protesting how pure and innocent they are and how wicked everyone else is more than they actually care about the issues. I think.
