Some people don't really like soap operas and that's OK

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 For me I don't get into asian drams because they are soap operas and every one I've had recommended to me really didn't grab me. Some of them even the description of the plot sounds like too much.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I enjoy k-dramas, but they're pretty much soap operas.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who loves K-dramas and I'll watch them with her to be polite, but honestly, all the ones she's watched remind me of telenovelas (which I grew up watching because my mom likes them) and I really don't like telenovelas, so I don't like the dramas she watches.

How difficult is it to get the source material legally? I'm always looking for different things to watch, but I'm not a pirate.

There are a shitload of em on Amazon Prime and Netflix, I think

Viewster (ad-supported free app/site) has a few Japanese series. Might have some Korean ones, too.

Dramafever site.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Some of DramaFever's back catalog is free. There are ads, but it's free. When you get to the newer shows, the later episodes will usually be premium users only.

Hulu has some but they really have pared down their Korean Dramas. (I suspected that DramaFever might be pulling shows they have exclusive access to, but The Heirs and Cheese in the Trap are DF coproductions??) There are a few more on the app than the website.

I made an AoS secret a while back and half the commenters on F!S were butthurt whiners who shat all over Daisy.

I'm Asian, I was raised on media made China and Hongkong, later on got hooked on Taiwanese and Korean dramas... and I STILL don't think it's for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to have a friend who was super into K-dramas and like you, was equally frustrated that few of her friends were interested. I didn't know what to tell her except that I'm not into soap operas. I don't watch American soap operas, either. Soap operas with an Asian cast don't interest me, either... and I AM Asian.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
They're just all too heterosexual for me (at least the Korean ones).

I watched this on Netflix last year? I think? And it was so fucking awesome. Definitely worth watching.

ETA: Omfg, that person is an utter idiot, despite their enthusiasm for the show. Jayzus. Better to read this: http://decider.com/2016/04/29/aetlier-underwear-netflix-available-to-stream-in-us/

I have a friend who is obsessed by Korean films. She showed me 'City Hunter', which was crazy but I loved it! Alternating episodes between cutsey and absolutey insane action.

I think it's more against foreign language than any specific region.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I can tell you why I don't generally watch foreign language shows or movies. I can't deal with subtitles for very long, I just start to read them and not pay attention to the action (also, I read a little slower than many people, which is not helpful for words that are only there for a set amount of time). And I can't stand it when audio and video are at all misaligned, mouth movement not lining up with dialogue, so dubbing is out. If any were filmed in English, I might give them a shot.

Do they otherwise like this genre of shows? I don't watch a lot of non-English media because there's not a lot of SF or superheroes, and that's what I like to watch. (Some exceptions for Chinese historical dramas because they're just that epic!)

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to watch Vampire Prosecutor. I like vampires. I like prosecutors. I like Asians. I like subtitles. But Vampire Prosecutor was awful.

And I don't have Netflix or Amazon Prime so I don't have any legal way of accessing Asian shows unless they're on DVD.

I'm totally prejudiced against love stories. I mean, I'm sure there exists some Korean drama out there without a romantic plot/subplot, but when the majority of them seem to be awfully dramatic drawn out romance...my reaction to the words "Korean drama" is basically an automatic disinterest until someone can bother to prove to me that it doesn't include a love story. Granted, I also never watched Game of Thrones because that's not really my type of thing either, so. I do watch like, one Japanese drama a year though, mostly the random comedy ones because for some reason Japanese humor really clicks with me sometimes.

Can I get a list of the shows in your secret, OP? The only one I recognize is Cheese in the Trap.

Every one I know has a favorite Kdrama and/or Jdrama and/or Thai-drama that they just love and recc to me constantly. But I...can't get into them. There were a few where I watched a few episodes, but IDK...they're always a little too on the melodramatic/cutesy side that I just can't enjoy them fully.

Just different strokes for different folks.
