As you know, Alice,

It is very common in western societies to see affairs between men as improper, and this may simply be respecting the setting. It's very likely also that it's playing to whatever part of the audience don't feel the need to turn everything into yaoi.

Get outta here with that bullshit.

It's a fantasy setting. If that society sees affairs between men as improper, that's entirely the result of a choice of the author, and like any other choice an author makes, it's something we can talk about and variously praise or criticize. I personally think that making that as a creative decision is usually bad unless there's some specific reason for it, which I don't believe exists in this case.

And with regards to "playing to the part of the audience that doesn't feel the need to turn everything into yaoi" I'm not even sure how to unpack this. Except to say that, first, there's nothing wrong with wanting to read gay relationships. Second, explicitly and clumsily writing about how not only is the relationship in question not gay, but also gay relationships are improper in general, goes so far beyond anything that's necessary in that regard. That's not just providing people with content they like. That's going out of your way to flip off a particular group of readers. Just ridiculous.

I know your post was in bad faith and your reply is probably going to be too but whatever.

This is a fantasy novel where dragons exist, magic exists and psychic bonds between humans and animals exist. I don't think homosexual relationships are too far on the fringe, given the setting.

"Respecting the setting"? This is a fantasy novel, anon. This setting has talking dragons, ships with sentient figureheads who absorb the memories of their captains after death (because they're made out of wood that used to be part of a dragon's cocoon), humans who can communicate telepathically with their animal companions, human zombies achieved via magical brainwashing, humans who grow scales and claws like dragons and also people can be brought back from the dead sometimes, with magic.

But by all means, "no homo" because a loving relationship between two men would be too crazy, amirite?
